jedi_of_urth: (writing rules)
So here's how writing can progress in my brain:

Stage 1: So there's the fic concept (somewhat fandom specific), and I have read a few good fics with it, but I always have to tamp down my feelings that it's a little contrived. I mean, I'll keep reading them if they sound good on a case by case basis because I have liked stories with that trope, but I don't think I'll write it.

Stage 2: Okay, so that specific fic concept, what if I tweaked it a little? It ends up getting to a similar point in some ways, but takes out some of the things that bother me in the more standard version? Hmm, might be worth thinking about...

Stage 3: Okay, but have you thought about a different completely mutually exclusive way to avoid those niggles that you realized bother you? I mean sure it has it's own niggles, and the more I think about it the more I seem inclined to build a convoluted plot going on in the background that it takes forever for the main characters to realize is going on. But maybe?

Stage 4: Have you considered an even more convoluted plot with 60 moving parts that somehow both throws out 90% of canon *and* relies on parts of canon that you don't recall very well?
...Bring it on.

Sometimes I miss the days when my brain was capable of thinking of small little fics that didn't spiral into massive epics that I'll never manage to write.

So this year's NaNo was basically a bust...again.

It started strong, then had a couple meh days then basically nothing for a couple weeks. Then I got hit with a different idea and I got a few thousand words into it. Then I figured out how I might get that idea to actually go where I wanted it to but it will require some reworking of what I've already done (and a lot of words in the middle to get there).

And I still have the question of how one actually finds a beta reader in these times. Actually at this point it's more like a cheerleader (but hopefully eventually a beta reader) as I'm so out of the fic writing game that I have little to no confidence in my writing.

To that end I have ended up rereading some of my old fics, and it has been a reminder that I don't completely suck as a writer. And a reminder that I should probably actually post stuff to ao3 at some point in case lj/dw vanish. Also maybe pick up a few new readers if I'm lucky. But in order to justify not back dating things I feel like I should at least be able to call them remastered and correct some typos that slipped through the crack.

I guess that's a project I could do...but I have other projects both fannish and real life, so we'll see.

And along those lines, if anyone is still out there, reading this, and wants to keep me thinking about old fics, feel free to ask me things about them. I may not be up for a full commentary, but I have memories.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So here's to deal (and yes I have realized lately how often I start posts with 'So...' but I'm going to keep doing it), the actual Agents of SHIELD s7 trailer left me pretty cold, it was about 90% made up of the scene saw months ago and the 16 second teaser we got a couple weeks back. And the whole thing focused on two things, it being the final season and the time travel, both of which are not exciting to me. If I wanted dumb time travel I'd still be watching Legends, I'm here because I still want to see the messy fallout with these characters and we got none of that.

And so, I present a project I've been thinking about for a couple months now. You remember how I repeatedly said in the s6 reviews that the AoS writers should have watched Farscape to figure out how to handle messy space ideas? Well, now look at a list of Farscape inspired things (with less yelling) I want said between May and Choni-Coulson.

ExpandDid I maybe just want to watch some Farscape? )

Hey guys, I’m going to post my last few AoS reactions in a bit, but this is just a wild bit of theory for the same show.

So I’ve been known to buy movies out of the cheap bin at Walmart and then forget to put them away for a while, which means today I finally realized that the last two movies I bought are kind of ironic.

-Hidden Figures
-Gone with the Wind

I sort of feel like this range of interests says a lot about how little I care about messaging in my entertainment.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So I’ve been doing a lot of writing recently, here let me summarize:

ExpandNot really spoilery, just to avoid cluttering your f-list )

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So all I’ve been posting recently is B5 reviews (I should proof the next one and get it posted...I’ll get to it), but here’s a few random looks into my head.

-Alternating between writing reviews involving Londo and writing (or trying to write) fic usually with a London setting involved having to keep careful eye on whether I’m typing the right thing at any given moment.

-Really the dual, and somewhat bizarre combination of fannish thoughts of Babylon 5 and Mr. Selfridge are still kind of monopolizing my fannish brain power. There look to be some interesting shows out there this summer but I haven’t been watching them, or catching up on the stuff I put off watching during the primary TV season, just sticking with that particular odd combination of fannish stars in my system.

-And baseball; I keep thinking I’m about ready to give up on my Rockies for the season but I keep sticking around and sometimes they make me think there might be hope yet.

-But...Tulo...I don’t know how to feel yet. Sad...yeah, sad.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
I figured I’d put together a report card of the TV shows I watched this year. Wow I watch a lot of TV.

ExpandThis is, I mostly drop shows if they would grade too low )

So...should it creep me out that I have a much better, easier, and more fun time writing Klaus being a gross evil creeper than trying to write Stefan and Damon as the sort of people you would give the time of day to?

Because good god am I having an awesome time writing Klaus scenes into my E/E fic, except now I need him to leave so I can get on with the E/E fallout.

(Actually I don’t think it says anything aside from the fact that I find Klaus much more interesting as a gross evil creeper than I do in his current show form and far far more interesting that the Salvatores. I don’t find it nearly as unsettling as how easily I can get in the head of Guy of Gisborne.)

COMMUNITY

Also, I thought this needed to be it's own post, but after my sort of resigned post last night it looks like COMMUNITY DID GET RENEWED. This would be a time to dig out some happy gifs, unfortunately I'm not in the mood, so consider this space reserved for a party soon.

BUT I'M VERY HAPPY EVEN WITHOUT A PARTY.

Okay, so I’m being talkative today, let’s do a writing update.

1) To Weather the Storm looks like it’s going to be the start of a series, I’ve written the first draft of a sequel story and am working on ideas for what to do next (some of it’s obvious, since my muses have decided there needs to be more plot in what was already porn with plot, but I need to work out what all will be in it).

Here, have a sample:

ExpandRead more... )

2) [livejournal.com profile] vd_kink continues to supply me with inspirations, not that I was at a loss for them anyway (anyone remember how I had that post 3x17 fic I wanted to write and haven’t done anything with since about the time 3x18 aired?)

Well, I want to talk about a couple of the ones I’m trying to write. ExpandWhy can't I just write easy PWP for kink fills? )

3) Things I'm not doing: working on my 100 drabbles of summer (I think I have like 4 done). Also not vidding, but vid muses are starting to get antsy and telling me I really DO want to do some of that (not that I'm arguing with them, just haven't been feeling the drive).

However, here’s the second draft of the unfulfilled shipping meme. Better? Worse? Still needs work?

Expand*31* days of unfulfilled shipping )
jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So today for the first time in several days the muses finally seem kind of sleepy (although they certainly haven't again reached the frenzy of Monday), and like we all just want to watch some mindless TV tonight. I did a little bit of writing this afternoon, but nothing substantial and tonight I doubt I could focus on it if I wanted to. But with chat tomorrow I think it's a good night to take away from it and give it a rest.

Not that you necessarily needed to know that, but I felt like sharing it. It also means it's a good night to point out I've posted several memes the last few days and people are still welcome to comment on them.
jedi_of_urth: (Default)
...muses won't let me. The muses have been in overdrive but apparently their version os rest involved backing into the usual territory of reminding me how much more I need to think about before I can attack certain sections of the story. This is not restful enough for my sleep but they also refuse to give me any more thought on the actual writing side even though I'm up.

FYI, I wrote more that 13,500 words *today* (well technically it was yesterday but since I haven't slept it feels like it's the same day). In one day I basically doubled my writing for the past six weeks of [livejournal.com profile] bigbanghood and it's all in medieval soup opera territory with little plot to be seen (a little sneaked in but now I have no idea how to get it back in focus). If I could write like that regularly, I'd have no worries about NaNoWriMo because I'd need like a week and of course no one would care about the lack of plot there (not that it's too much of a deterrent in fanfic always either I admit. Spending huge amounts of time on Guy's tortured backstory is kind of the point of the story after all.)

It it weren't spread over two stories I'd almost have myself a 30k story as is, now I need to get one and preferably both of them back on track to to tell the full story, in admittedly probably a more than 30k words each (and on one of them, but unfortunately not the one I worked on today) I'd already intended it to be part of a series, but even the one part I thought I do for BBH is looking like it's going to be longer than I intended.

I do have some modly stuff I'm reminded I need to do for the comm, but maybe the muses will late me sleep now that I've bragged about them to the world (of at least my corner of the interwebs).

Any complete nonsensical aspects of this post should in no way be taken as a reflection on my actual writing ability, but should be blamed on the muses for not letting me rest when I wanted to.

[livejournal.com profile] katesutton shares a birthday with me, so now we're both a year older. Happy birthday to you and us.

Thanks to the people who have wished me a happy birthday today.

I could react to the DW s5 news, but I've left several response today and it'll give me something to post about tomorrow if I put it off.

So...I think it's finally happened, Robin Hood has eaten my brain so much that I now care about it more than the Doctor Who verse. All week I've been writing my [livejournal.com profile] bigbanghood fics in the evening instead of watching Torchwood, even though I hear it's been really good. I'm really glad TW is good, and I do want to watch it, and in fact I'd probably react entirely different if it wasn't a matter of 'well I can wait until they're all out and watch them then.'

fun times

This week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 totally deserves an answer.

Name five series that should have had a musical episode (and how it could have been explained).

1) Doctor Who

The Doctor (for this Ten in my mind) and Rose land on a planet that communicated in song, or maybe there's some kind of alien virus that makes the do it, as long as I get my Doctor/Rose love songs and spazy dance numbers.

2) Robin Hood

Ummm...maybe Prince John made a decree that around him everyone had to sing, he could be that crazy for a few days, and he'd kill anyone who didn't (unfortunately that wouldn't provide enough of an excuse to get the Outlaws to sing and Sneaking Song as they sneaked into the castle.. Mostly I just think RA singing would be really sexy.

3) The Middleman

They totally could have done it in any number of ways, all of them probably more creative than I can come up with right now. But it would have been awesome.

4) Avatar

I suspect for that one we'd have to go with the someone got hit on the head and started seeing the world in song version (aka the Scrubs explanation) of one of Aang's past lives manages to make music and lots of singing happen. In any case I say, bending dance scenes, would be awesome.

5) Stargate

Either hit on the head, or alien infection, either way it would drive Jack nuts and would be fun to watch.
