jedi_of_urth: (writing rules)

So here's how writing can progress in my brain:

Stage 1: So there's the fic concept (somewhat fandom specific), and I have read a few good fics with it, but I always have to tamp down my feelings that it's a little contrived. I mean, I'll keep reading them if they sound good on a case by case basis because I have liked stories with that trope, but I don't think I'll write it.

Stage 2: Okay, so that specific fic concept, what if I tweaked it a little? It ends up getting to a similar point in some ways, but takes out some of the things that bother me in the more standard version? Hmm, might be worth thinking about...

Stage 3: Okay, but have you thought about a different completely mutually exclusive way to avoid those niggles that you realized bother you? I mean sure it has it's own niggles, and the more I think about it the more I seem inclined to build a convoluted plot going on in the background that it takes forever for the main characters to realize is going on. But maybe?

Stage 4: Have you considered an even more convoluted plot with 60 moving parts that somehow both throws out 90% of canon *and* relies on parts of canon that you don't recall very well?
...Bring it on.

Sometimes I miss the days when my brain was capable of thinking of small little fics that didn't spiral into massive epics that I'll never manage to write.
