Thanks to the people who have wished me a happy birthday today.
I've finally realized something that makes my urge to write Robin Hood fic different from every other bit of fic I've ever attempted. As cracky as RH is it's not sci-fi/fantasy which means I can't use spells/potions/alien diseases/time travel/etc. to get me out of a plot jam.
Fandoms I have or tried to write in in the past:
Babylon 5: sci-fi, and I was a tween at the time. Future tech, telepathy, various races, while fairly sciency it could be stretched. Plus like I said I was tweeny at the time and didn't really have a huge fic style yet.
Buffy: I loved writing/trying to write seriously cracky Buffy stories about spells gone wonky plus the supernatural elements made it not only easy but expected that stories would contain things from beyond the realm of science.
Harry Potter: More or less the same set up as Buffy, except I did less with it I admit.
Doctor Who: Need a new Time Lord/Bad Wolfy ability to get you out of a plot jam, go for it and it'll be awesome. Entire epics can be centered around that new ability or it can just show up for the good of another story. Or some unexpected interaction of alien devices/germs/genetics/what have you can bring a lot of things about.
But...unless you want to have medieval England invaded by aliens (and don't think I haven't thought about it) Robin Hood is actually not real open to the supernatural/super human (in ways that aren't canon such as Guy's inability to determine a person's gender). One could do some crossover stuff I suspect, but on its own it's very...not magical (inexplicable and cracky yes, magical no). It's different.
But RH is a different animal for me in a lot of ways I guess.
I could react to the DW s5 news, but I've left several response today and it'll give me something to post about tomorrow if I put it off.

Au contraire! It is YOUR fic. How AU you want to take it is up to you. if Guy is on the edge of the (suddenly appearing) Locksley Grand Canyon, and the Tradis should Whoooop! into frame, who are we to question you??? ;-) But, as you said, that would be squarely in the "crossover" camp.

Mwahhahaha! ;-) Thank you!
Good luck!

Like how the hell do I get Guy and Marian to stop hating at each other and make out? The story is heavy on angst and light on snogging so far, and that's just unfortunate.

"Love Potion Number Niiiiiine!"
How about using just a little bit of herbal magic/lore? time correct but still open enough and wonky enough to play with?
Something like, they were both walking through Nottingham, snarking at each other, when the Herbalist/WiseWoman was shaking her tablecloth out of the window. Residual approdisiastic dust swirled around them. They either start sneezing then snogging right then,--OR-- it has a delayed effect. They both get back to the castle, and while changing their clothes (seperately), i.e. pulling the garmet over their heads, they inhale said substance and are overcome with...well...lust. Guy goes to find Mrian, as alwyas, and as he's the first person Marian sees after...umm ...inhaling, falls into his arms. All on account of a little magic pixie dust (ground mushrooms, perhaps?) What do you think? magical yet practical and of its time? Am *I* high? ::skips away::
Of course the tone may be all wrong for what you're trying to do, but hey, thought I'd give it a whirl to see if it was useful...;-)
