Thanks to the people who have wished me a happy birthday today.
I've finally realized something that makes my urge to write Robin Hood fic different from every other bit of fic I've ever attempted. As cracky as RH is it's not sci-fi/fantasy which means I can't use spells/potions/alien diseases/time travel/etc. to get me out of a plot jam.
Fandoms I have or tried to write in in the past:
Babylon 5: sci-fi, and I was a tween at the time. Future tech, telepathy, various races, while fairly sciency it could be stretched. Plus like I said I was tweeny at the time and didn't really have a huge fic style yet.
Buffy: I loved writing/trying to write seriously cracky Buffy stories about spells gone wonky plus the supernatural elements made it not only easy but expected that stories would contain things from beyond the realm of science.
Harry Potter: More or less the same set up as Buffy, except I did less with it I admit.
Doctor Who: Need a new Time Lord/Bad Wolfy ability to get you out of a plot jam, go for it and it'll be awesome. Entire epics can be centered around that new ability or it can just show up for the good of another story. Or some unexpected interaction of alien devices/germs/genetics/what have you can bring a lot of things about.
But...unless you want to have medieval England invaded by aliens (and don't think I haven't thought about it) Robin Hood is actually not real open to the supernatural/super human (in ways that aren't canon such as Guy's inability to determine a person's gender). One could do some crossover stuff I suspect, but on its own it's very...not magical (inexplicable and cracky yes, magical no). It's different.
But RH is a different animal for me in a lot of ways I guess.
I could react to the DW s5 news, but I've left several response today and it'll give me something to post about tomorrow if I put it off.
