1) Obviously I kind of fell off Snowflake the last few days, I had other things I was working on and the last couple questions didn't seem urgent for me to answer when I had plot bunnies jumping.

2) One could still add to my month of meta prompts...though I am considering bumping it to March and maybe adding a few of my own to the mix so it's a fuller month. So far we have

In your own space, resurrect an old meme. Have fun with it! Which is the goofiest meme you can think of? Put on your party hat and be silly!! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is a multi-part treatment of the challenge.

1) I did post several old memes I'm still willing to talk about in challenge #7
--I have a wide range of interests from historical drama to space opera, plenty of comic book TV shows/movies, and the occasional sitcom.

2) The Snowflake challenge post suggested the Which SciFi/Fantasy Character Are You? quiz and I got... )

3) I have decided that in preparation for leaner conversation time come February and the end of Snowflake, I'm going to dip into a different sort of meme

So the best I could do on short notice is getting down a compressed version of my view of how the CW's 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' should have ended for Oliver. Because it makes no sense for him to have been dead at the end of that story. And yes, I used a modified/truncated [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence format because the snapshot format really does help me...skip stones across a fic idea without needing to get down in the depths of it. Also, obviously unbeted, not even properly edited by me (if I end up expanding it or something I would need to do both) and basically rushed out and posted before I had time to convince myself it wasn't worth sharing even for this challenge.

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

(There probably is an interpretation of this prompt that didn't have to be fandom related, but it went on to talk about fannish things, so that's also where my mind went.)

I will recommend my ongoing review project over at [community profile] tori_reviews. I'm just getting going on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but there's also a back catalog of other fandoms, often with more detailed takes that Clone Wars (hee, I had that abbreviated CW but thought that might be confusing since I have reviewed some CW shows before) is getting so far, but it's just starting and I could easily develop more to discuss as it goes. I'd say my Agents of SHIELD reviews have a lot of thoughts in them if you're interested.

And for reccing my own creative work, I'll pick a few of my favorites, but you can look through the whole list of fic and vids if you're so inclined. I'm not going to rec any vids since it's been a long time since I went through them and don't have strong feelings about most anymore; though if you check them out I'd steer towards the later ones, the early ones are pretty rough unless you find you really like my style, especially the attempt at conversation between lyrics and video; it's there in the early ones, but the editing is rougher.

Challenge #8

In your own space, create a wishlist. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I wish I could find a beta reader for my AoS fic. I've got a couple that wouldn't take much for me to send to a beta, and a couple more that if I knew I had someone to help me polish them I'd probably finally finish them. Some have been sitting around for a while but I'm not confident enough on my own to do anything with them.

I wish fandom would find a new home (as in not tumblr or twitter) and that it would be one with comment threads; that was a mistake for fandom to lose.

I wish for some comments on one of my old fics or vids; I recognize my own fault for leaving things in journal-land instead of AO3, but I feels like some things have never been read. Or if someone wanted to pop in for a discussion on one or more of my reaction/reviews.

I wish we could stop living in interesting times.

I wish I could find a couple of old fics from fandoms past that were unfinished and maybe never were, but I didn't keep track of them to know.

The thing I miss most from when fandom was a more active thing, is memes. Mostly fandom memes, but also friending memes, kink memes, challenge memes; all the stuff that circled around and knit the community together. I went back through my lj archives and found a few fandom memes I wouldn't mind resurrecting. But I'm also going to challenge others to do the same thing, since we come from a lot of different fandoms we probably had different memes that made the rounds. So you can reply challenging me do answer these and/or link to your own; or you can answer some of them here with your fandom of choice

These ended up being more shipping focused that I intended, but that doesn't exactly surprise me )

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I don't know why this one was so hard for me, but it I had a really hard time deciding what I wanted to rec.

The easiest choice was the rec turtle_goose's family business series, I did most of the beta reading for that as we passed fics back and forth back in our TVD days, and I can vouch for the fact that she was going to do more with the series, but what we got was still good. The first story in the series is necessary for understanding the rest of the series, but not really a reflection of it, it barely a step away from PWP, but there's quite a bit more fluff (with sexy times) after that.

While you're reading her stuff, I'd recommend A Vampire in the Family, she and I also had a mutual drive to try out TVD/Castle crossovers, if that also has some appeal to you, it's pretty good.

And while I didn't beta read, it I also enjoyed The Once & Future Captain, I probably never would have found it if she hadn't written is since I don't read a lot of fic in Star Trek fandom, but this one was well thought through.

What I have been reading a lot of lately (as in the last 2-3 years) is Agents of SHIELD and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and these were a something I thought of for each fandom.

Buried Alive: A very well written and thought out post series fic; while it is decidedly Roy/Riza it's not really a ship fic as there's a lot more going on.

Work-Life Balance: however is a shamelessly shippy, post series, fix it story that basically does everything I would opt for in terms of creating an actual happy ending for my favorite couple.

Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I didn't really know what to do with this one, I still largely don't, but I still wanted to give it something. And what I've landed on is a couple anime I've watched in the past year that made me do lots of ugly crying.

I have kind of an odd relationship to amine in general. I've tried to really get into it several times in my life and it's never quite stuck. I'm in a more interested phase now that more is on Netflix so I don't have to go seeking it out. Also, in my early rounds of trying to get into anime, my college friends were subs-only people and I'm a dub person (I think part of it is that dubbing has overall been improved since those friends had their experience getting into anime, so now it's easier to be a dubs person).

And that's connected with this, because my emotional reactions to amine stories are a lot deeper when I can more easily immerse myself in the story than having to split focus for reading subtitles. That said, part of why I'm talking about this is that I don't know that I would consider myself a huge fan of either of these shows. I'm not drawn to write fic or find fandom discourse (if I ever get back into vidding and there happens to be a particular song that strikes me, maybe I'd do that), I just appreciate the series as they are.

Also, I'm sure these are common recs for people who want anime regularly, but for people who only watch occasionally like me, they might be new.

1) Anohana
It's basically what happens five years after Bridge to Terabithia, and a whole group of friends who had one of them die when they were little. After that the group drifted apart and are all haunted by her death in one way or another. Then her ghost comes back; but it's not haunting, it's about finally being able to heal and reconnect and at the end say goodbye. And that final episode was a super ugly cry.

2) Violet Evergarden
I'm really still not sure I actually liked this series. I found the first half or so to be a bit bland, though interesting enough to keep me watching. But about halfway through, every episode seemed to find a way to have me sobbing by the end. It's really more of a vignette style series, and it's really good at that. It creates interesting, and often tragic, characters that the lead (Violet) interacts with in each episode, making you care about these new characters and situations for the course of the episode and moving on. Only on occasion did I find Violet herself to be the most interesting character in a story, but she's a good glue that holds the vignettes together.

Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is a fandom journal so I'm going to make what amounts to New Years resolutions only as pertains to fandom; if I get into life stuff it will just make me sad. Either way, they do say if you want to make god laugh tell him your plans, so this may all come to naught.

Let's start with a couple of goals I really intend to do:

-Keep up a good schedule and pace with [community profile] tori_reviews, I did better last year than I had before, but I think I can still do better.
-Find a beta reader and someone I can talk through fic ideas with (hopefully the same person, but I'd take separate if needs be). At the very least figure out how to find such a person in a very different fandom landscape to when I last had someone like that.

Then the small/medium goals that I could probably do if I set my mind to it:

-Remaster some of my old fic and upload to AO3 (or figure out how to word a header that makes clear it was written at another point in fandom opinion)
-Try vidding again, I used to do it a lot and I miss it sometimes.
-Reread ASOIAF, it's been years since I read it at this point; I always said I'd wait until GRRM gave us a time for WoW, now maybe I can trick the universe into taking my reread as a sign that the book needs to come out.

Then a couple big goals that I hope I can do but seem too big now.
-ACTUALLY FINISH ONE OF THOSE HUGE FIC IDEAS, even if it's just book 1 and I have plans for books 2-5, have a completed story that can stand on its own.
-I've wanted to try doing a podcast for a long time; like introducing someone else to a series I really like and sharing the experience with anyone who wants to listen in. In a serious way, I think if I actually accomplished this, it would send a message to my social anxiety riddled brain that I can open myself up to at least an online community even if I still struggle with in person people. And I'd feel like I was developing a skill, which would also help.

Challenge #3: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I found myself thinking about this for a bit after it was revealed, even as I was reading it. My first thought was that I would read it as characters I wanted to hang out with, and realized that in my recent fandoms there aren't a lot that I wanted that. Not that I would mind if I could meet them; Chidi from The Good Place for example, I could get FroYo with him sometime.

Then my mind went back to old favorites, and I found myself debating which characters from Babylon 5 I'd want to have lunch with, and I had a pretty hard time deciding that. I kind of want to (per my icon) talk with Sheridan about politics and how we make things better; I just want to hang with Ivanova; I want to turn to Delenn for life advice because I think she'd be a really good person to turn to; I might get a bit lost with G'Kar (late G'Kar), but I sure wouldn't miss the opportunity to hear more of his thoughts; I think Vir and I could have a really chill time.

But then I realize I could go with a real person and that the absolute dream is meeting JMS; he's basically been my idol since I was 12 and having the chance to sit down with the man himself for a while would be amazing. And it would have to be a while because I'd be too nervous to talk, and then I'd just be squeeing for a while. But it would be amazing for 13 year old me, 20 year old me, 30 year old me, and now me. I've loved Babylon 5 for 2/3 or my life and it would be wonderful to meet the man who created and basically penned it, and gave me so many ideas that shaped who I am.

Challenge #2

In your own space (or their own space) interact with someone new. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. No need to leave a link for this one, but if you’d like to invite others to join the conversation, please do leave one.

So I'm getting to this one pretty late, but there are reasons for that. Mostly because I already did some of that in day 1 (and I have a lot of the day 1 thread to go through when I get back in the mood).

I did still want to do something for the day, but I don't know what future days will cover and I don't want to double up too much. The best I idea I've had is to set up a 'come at me bro' unpopular opinions post; but I keep hitting up against the idea that there might be an unpopular opinions day.

But, if someone wanted some of my views from the edges of fandom that might not fit in so well with getting into it, feel free to ask/encourage (I'm most set up to talk about the MCU/Agents of SHIELD and maybe the Arrowverse, but I have other interests too).

Alright, I will poke my head out of my little tiny bubble and do at least some of this year's snowflake challenge.

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hello, my name is jedi_of_urth, but you can call me Tori if you want, I'm not too picky. I've been lurking on the edges of various fandoms for years so some of you might have encountered me before, but no shame if you haven't or have forgotten all about me, I've been even more on the outskirts of late.

Part of that is that I never quite made the leap off livejournal and that has remained where I'm more likely to post if I just have something on my mind. If you poke around my dreamwidth account you'll find it's most my fic journal so far. Maybe one day I'll get around to moving more stuff over; if I have more people I want to interact with here that might be a reason.

But for a while I've been focusing on my side blog [community profile] tori_reviews where I review TV shows. In 2020 I focused on short run series, and this year is shaping up to be Star War/Marvel heavy; in fact I just posted my preparatory thoughts on Clone Wars, so if you want to come with me on that journey it's a good time to join me. It would be nice if I wasn't always talking into the void...it just hasn't stopped me yet.

(I'm pretty sure I come off as sulky here, but who isn't a little sulky after this last year?)

I'm far from shy about my fandom opinions, so if there's anything you want to know go ahead and ask.
