For the June talking meme [livejournal.com profile] wheatear asked me:

June 15th: A book or game you would like to turn into a TV show or film and how you would do it.

A few answers )

So I went to see Ender’s Game. Short version: go read the book.

Read more...really )

I tried

Okay, I made myself stick with it for 200 pages, I really did. I thought it might get better or at least more readable and I do hate to give up on books without giving them a fair chance so I made myself come this far. But I’m throwing in the towel, admitting defeat. The Return actually is that bad and I see no value in continuing.

Spoilers (if you can call it that) for TVD: The Return 1 (which I can't be bothered to look up the subtitle of) )

I decided to stick with the Stefan’s Diary books for another round. Now I’m taking a short break from TVD books but when I get back to them I’ll probably start the Return books, which I hear are awful. SO I complaining I do about this one will be nothing next to that I can only assume.

SD: vol 3: The Carving )

Okay, so more TVD books, back to Stefan’s Diaries this time.

SD: vol 2: Bloodlust )

So I’ve never really explained it before, but I get a lot of reading done during baseball games, especially when my boys aren’t doing so hot. I still watch all the games but I spend a lot of it with my nose in the book when I can’t bear to watch the game too closely.

As such I’m already done with TVD volume 4: Dark Reunion

There's actually a fair amount of show commentary in this one, FYI )

So through “The Fury” TVD book volume 3 (I think I may finally be able to settle on sing the volume numbers, but this maybe/maybe not two volumes in a book thing is confusing).

The Fury, with some vague show spoilers )

A while ago, [livejournal.com profile] turtle_goose posted the following meme

1. Leave a comment to this post!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows.

and at my response gave me an E to work with.

A couple of obvious ones, others less so )

So more thoughts on TVD books.

I took a break from reading the books the show was based on and read the first book based on the show. And the short version: IT IS SO MUCH BETTER.

General show spoilers, and the first Stefan's Diary book )

TVD book 2

So I finished up ‘The Struggle’ otherwise known as TVD book 2 (or the second half of book one I think), and...

It...sucked less )

Okay, now I’ve listened to The Hunger Games on audiobook and started Catching Fire (a bit over two disks in), and seen THG movie. So I might as well post about my thoughts.

Note I said thoughts, not feelings )

Okay, so I went to the library today and figured I might as well check out some more of the Vampire Diaries books since I was there anyway. (I haven't gotten very far in The Struggle yet actually, but that's mostly because I still have to stop and remind myself of things like: "They don't mean MY Katherine is weak and soft," "It's okay, MY Salvatores totally love each other," etc.)

Anyway, I don't know if the library didn't have them last time I was looking or if I just didn't notice, but it turns out there's a series of Stefan's Diaries. And reading the back I discovered these ones are BASED ON THE SHOW. This weirds me out; books based on a show that was originally based on a book series. They're probably going to be totally fanficy aren't they? But I also kind of can't resist the idea of reading it NOW, for MY Stefan, MY Damon, MY Katherine, probably some Lexi, the Founding Families, Bennett witches, and everything I love about the Civil War era flashbacks. (And is it too much to hope for some Originals? They were hunting Katherine after all.)

I guess I'll see what I feel like reading first...

Okay, so I finally finished the first Vampire Diaries book (of maybe the first half of the first one, I checked The Awakening and The Struggle out separately but I don’t know if they were published together. It’s an easy read, but it takes a while when you have to stop and laugh hysterically at every other thing that happens.

'Spoilers' for The Awakening, minor spoilers for all of TVD the show )

So we're at day 4 of FMM, so another day of my thoughts on the subject.

We're almost done )

But you know what I *do* still care about? TVD and Community will be back in TWO DAYS, this makes me happy. I kind of forgot my idea of doing some flashback TVD ep reviews, oh well there's always summer hiatus. I've had so many fic ideas it's not even funny anymore. I think I need to rewatch the last few episodes just to get my head out of fic land and back into canon.

I have also tried reading the first book of The Vampire Diaries. I think the only way to read it is for the lulz, because it's really bad. I know if one only took the first few episodes of TVD they might say the same thing so it may not be fair to judge the first half the first book but...it's what I think a lot of us *expected* the show to be. I may end up tempted to write crack fic about book characters meeting their show counterparts because it should provide even more funny that way.

Okay, so I think I need to talk about the couple of books I’ve finished in the last week.

First the obvious (and long) A Dance With Dragons Read more... )

And now the less obvious: The Snow Queen’s Shadow Read more... )
jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So my goal to have reread ASOIAF 1-4 before Dance With Dragons comes out has not worked. Even though it looks like mine is still a couple days away I’m not even through rereading GoT yet. That’s several thousand words left before I’ve reread everything PLUS the thousand or so of the next book. So basically I think I’ll finish GoT and just go on memory for the rest (which I know is spotty because there’s a lot to keep track of) because once I have Dance in my hands I’m not going to be able to resist it (actually I *may* be able to keep my hands off it for a few days but I can’t swear to it).

It may be interesting to try and document my thoughts as I read but I’m not going to commit to it. I’m as unlikely to do it if I say I will as if I say nothing, which is a poorly constructed sentence that I don’t feel like editing.

What I can give you though is some babble about my predictions/hopes for the series.

Spoilers through AFFC, I don't think any of what little I know about ADWD slipped in )

So, in my continuing current interest in reading juvenile/young adult books I've decided to attack the Animorphs series. I only read the first ten or so back when I was actually reading the series and I had not realized just how long it had gotten so this could be a long process. Easy reading sure but lots of it. I think I may try to do reaction posts to it as I read through the series, just to keep a chronicle of my thoughts.

On the subject one of these days I ought to make some thinky thoughts posts about some of the other series' I've been reading (Artemis Fowl in particular sparks some thinky thoughts) but I'll save that for when I need an Animorphs break I guess.

Oh, and I forgot to include this in my SGA reaction post last night but spoilers for the preview for next week's SGA )
