So now that the baseball playoff are about to start (after basically starting yesterday), I get to start making postseason baseball posts.

So, Wild Card games: I don’t think it will surprise anyone who I’m rooting for.

A’s vs. Yankees
I’ll be rooting for the A’s, in part because I almost always root against the Yankees, but I don’t really know enough about how the teams have matched up this year to make any predictions.

Rockies vs. Cubs
These two are really evenly matched I don’t think either is a guarantee; but that I’m rooting for the Rockies should be easy to guess.

Also, if both the Rockies and the A’s win, I can go on hoping for a Drazi World Series. Purple vs. Green.

I did forget to do the previous round of baseball thoughts, but I can do a few now

-NLCS retrospective
I realized about game 3 that I was actually rooting for the Dodgers. Emotionally I never strongly favored them, I would have been perfectly happy with the Cubs winning, but I did sort of want the Dodgers to win. And practically it quickly became obvious that they should win. They were the better team, as they have been so many times this season.

-ALCS retrospective
For a while there I wasn’t sure how this series was going to end; Houston started off so well, then the Yankees got hot, I figured Verlander could push it to a game 7 but then game 7’s are so unpredictable that I didn’t have any solid idea going in how it would go. I was always rooting for Houston, but I didn’t dislike the Yankees as much as I used to, they have a lot of players that I’ve liked in the past so I couldn’t actually be against them as much as I would have a few years ago.

However, it applies to both teams but especially the Yankees, that as a Rockies fan I get pissed off that the announcers just praise these teams for being so good at home when I know that if it were the Rockies all we would here about is how Coors field inflates their stats or whatever. Rockies players always have to have road stats that are just about as good as they are at home for people to take them seriously as hitters, never mind that they play half their road games in west coast pitcher-friendly parks.

That’s...a little off topic, but I’m glad for Houston.

-World Series thoughts
I hope the series goes the distance, as I always do since afterward there’s no baseball for several months and that makes me sad. But I kind of don’t see it taking that long, and whatever length it goes I wouldn’t bet against the Dodgers. They’ll have their pitchers lined up how they want them since they’ve had some time off; the Astros haven’t made much of a case that they can win on the road and LA has home field advantage; and the Dodger have just made everything look easy while the Astros have not. One could argue that they haven’t had to really battle anything this post season (or much of the season one could say), so if they run into a little bit of trouble we don’t know how prepared they are to fight back, but if that’s the one area I can think of where they don’t have the clear advantage, I’m still betting on the Dodgers.
jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So I ended up waiting until after the first couple games of all the division series to give my next round of thoughts on how it’s going.

Boston vs. Houston
The Red Sox have looked far outclassed in the first couple games, and while I can maybe see them managing to win a game at home I doubt the series will even get back to Houston and the Astros seem pretty likely to win. Which is fine with me as I was rooting for Houston, I’ve been nominally on their side for the last few years and they’ve been awfully good this year, also they’re playing Boston who I can’t root for; plus right now Houston is feel-good choice.

NYY vs. Cleveland
I give Cleveland the edge only because they’re so far ahead right now, if the Yankees can manage to use home-field to their advantage and push the series as far as a game 5 I think it could go either way. And as I’m still incapable of rooting for the Yankees I’m fine with the way this is presently headed.

CHC vs. Washington
I find myself rooting for the Cubs, mostly because the announcers are so far up the butts of a few of the Nats players I find myself disliking them more than they probably deserve. As far as predicting the outcome I could see it go either way after that second game, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs being at home for the next couple plays to their advantage; if it gets to game 5 I wouldn’t call anything, but if anyone wins in 4 I suspect the Cubs.

Arizona vs. LAD
It’s hard to predict anything but the Dodgers, but I was really pulling for the D-Backs, even after they beat my Rockies. And this is another situation where if Arizona can turn it around at home and push it to a game 5 I feel like most bets are off, but right not now I have a hard time expecting that to happen.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So I have started doing reactions of what I’m watching this year (so far just The Orville and The Good Place, though I’m going to start Inhumans and maybe Discovery when I get the chance), but for the moment I’m going to talk about something different. It’s that time of year when I talk baseball.

Especially this year since my Rockies are in the playoffs. We’ll see how long it lasts, but it’s been a fun season that I hope continues well into October.

And so Wild Card game predictions:

AL: Twins vs. Yankees
NY has to be favored since they came in ahead of Minnesota but I’m rooting for the Twins. I’m basically incapable of rooting for the Yankees plus I’m angling for a frozen world series between Minn. and Colorado. But I don’t really know enough about AL teams to know how to predict the outcome.

NL: Rockies vs. D-backs
Obviously I’m rooting for the Rockies, they’re my team, but in a one game showdown I’m not going to lay odds on either team. They’re played each other enough this season that there are no surprises coming; the D-backs definitely have the edge on the season series, though in Arizona they’re pretty even as I recall. It might come down to if Martinez is playing like a human again or still curb-stomping everybody. GO ROCKIES.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So I was on vacation there for a week of so, my and my folks went to Phoenix for the tail end of spring training and caught opening day between the D-back and the Rockies. This brings my parents' total of baseball stadiums they've been to to around 20 and mine to three, but I'm less on a mission to go to them all. None of us had ever been to an opening day before and it was actually a lot of fun (the last few years most Rocks games we make it to are not so well attended), and that game at least the Rockies won in handy fashion.

I ended up talking baseball longer than I thought so I'll put it in a cut )

Now some TV reaction reviews.

I don’t know why I didn’t do this days ago, but some continued baseball thoughts.

-Poor Cubbies, I was rooting for them but they just could pull it together this time around. I can’t exactly decide if the Mets looked good or the Cubs looked kind of bad, but that was kind of a disappointing series I wasn’t exactly invested just had a clear preference in the outcome.

-Yay Royals, not having been able to watch any of this series (compensating with a little bit of radio, a lot of MLB gameday viewer, technically I could have watched the one game that was on Fox proper, but I was busy that night) I wasn’t terribly invested, but I was rooting Royals in the abstract so I’m glad the end went the way it did. Seemed like a pretty good series.

-I really can’t decide who I’m rooting for in the World Series. There’s a limited number of AL teams that can overcome my natural inclination to root for the NL, but the Royals are squarely on the list. On the other hand having been able to watch the NL games so far this post season and not the AL ones has mostly tilted the scales back towards the Mets. So I’ll end p rooting for good games and a good series more than for either team specifically; at least to start, we’ll see what m gut reaction to things is once the games get going.

Well, another day, another bit of babble about the baseball playoffs; it’s a good thing lj is so dead these days or I might be annoying people.

Apparently my unscientific reasoning worked just fine for the end of the ALDS series, so I must report the jays here are not making a fuss today. By the same unscientific reasoning I am still rooting for KC, so they’ve still got that vibe flow going for them. Since I wasn’t able to watch much of the ALDS-es I don’t have a lot of feelings about the games or what it means for the ALCS. It does mean I’m less likely to count Toronto out if they fall behind, and less likely to think it will be easy for KC to pull out a victory than I might have thought before. But I don’t have a ton of insight into making predictions here...and now the jays are waking up...a little bit.

I suspect the Cubs will get off to a good start in the NLCS as they’ll have their lineup more where they want it. And I actually think the Cubs look like a better team than the Mets, and they had the better record; but I’m not prepared to predict anything long term in this series as both kind of surprised me in the DS. Aside from that one game we sure got the pitching duels I was predicting in the Mets-Dodgers series, while the Cubs-Cards was a much more offensive battle, but I suspect both teams can both pitch and hit, so we’ll see what they do when they come up against each other.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
Okay, so we’ve got three series going to game five, annoyingly two of them are AL so I can’t watch them. Either way we’re at three crap shoot gams left to play this round.

-As much as the jays outside my house were throwing a party this morning I can only conclude the Blue Jays will win (highly scientific reasoning, but as I have no other ideas at this point – having been wrong about Texas winning in Texas – it’s what’s I’m going with).
-In terms of pattern this would be Houston’s turn to win, but I’ll stick with predicting KC.
-Pattern would also say Mets and I kind of think they have more cards to play in game 5 than the Dodgers do, so let’s go Mets.

Congrats Cubs and fans, we’ll see if this momentum can keep going, because I’m definitely rooting with you guys in the next round.

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So how about some more baseball babbling after the first wive of the division series?

Texas v. Toronto
Yeah, I think Texas is going to win this one, if not in three then four. I’m not exactly bothered by this.

Houston v. KC
I still think KC will win, but I also think it’ll probably come to a game five and then it’s kind of a crap shoot, so obviously we’ll see. I also notice my KC preference showing itself more as things go along.

Chicago v. St. Louis
I’m rooting for five games at this point, I think either could win and I think it will probably go to five and as previously stated that becomes a bit unpredictable. I like both teams so I’ll stick with rooting for both.

Mets v. Dodgers (I realized NY v. LA gives no great indication who’s playing)
I definitely find myself rooting Mets, but I’m not sure who’s going to pull this one off. Obviously it’s going to four games, probably five and I don’t exactly see how it ends; I lean a little towards Mets still, but not enough to call it.

Apparently I think these are some really good match ups that I have no idea how to call, I’m sure it’s been super exciting to read me say that so many times. And now it’s about time for more baseball...

Wildcard reactions

Yay Astros, beat those damn Yankees. And that was pretty decisive, good to watch and the result I wanted.

The NL game was a little more surprising, the Cubs were a lot more dominant than I expected in it. But I was instinctively rooting for them right from the start (plus it was my old pretend baseball boyfriend Dexter, who will always be a Rockie in my heart), so yay again.

DS predictions/hopes

First thing I wish is that I was going to be able to watch the AL games, but we don’t get FS1 or MLB Network, damn you Fox.

Suppose it's a little long from here, so under a cut it goes )

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
Also baseball playoffs start tonight. I haven’t talked about baseball much this season because my boys (see icon) kind of sucked (well, the pitching mostly sucked, the offense and defense had some real gems), but I always feel like talking about the postseason even though there’s probably even less interest in baseball talk than other things I post about.

So my predictions and hopes for the wildcard games:

AL: Houston Astros v. New York Yankees
I don’t know enough AL to know what to predict but I’m rooting for Houston on the dual principle of long time underdogs and rooting against the Yankees. I wonder what they’re head to head record was this year, I’m sure announcers will tell me.

NL: Chicago Cubs v Pittsburg Pirates
These two seem fairly evenly matched, but like a lot of people I have to root for the Cubs but accept that it shouldn’t be too surprising if they fall off the postseason track at some point possibly soon. Again I don’t know what to expect except it will probably be a good game.

I’ll check back in in a couple days for how this round went and talk about the division series...

jedi_of_urth: (Default)
So, baseball is done for a few months, now the extent of my interest in sport can hibernate for the winter, there's not even the Olympics to break it up. Oh well Royals, I was rooting for you, but you got outplayed in the end, if my Rockies are so disappointing again next year I'll be back to pay attention to you guys again.

And now back to fandom...with some more talk about AoS and the larger MCU.

So a few of my shows are back, and I have early thoughts.

very mild spoilers for Downton, Saving Hope, SHIELD, Once, and Castle )

Also I did watch the first season (half season) of Outlander and...it was good I guess, I wanted to love it, but I didn’t and so that makes me a little unsure how to grade it. I’ll probably keep watching it when it eventually comes back, or I may rewatch Life on Mars which I do love.

In addition: GO ROYALS, I’m rooting for you guys even more after last night.

So to round out the what I've been watching portion of posting, baseball. Then we'll get into my TVD-verse reactions of the week.

So baseball, a subject I know almost none of you care about but is my non-fiction fandom. Any other pro sport? Blerg, do not care, but baseball I love. And unlike all your sports I get a good seven months (more if I felt the need to follow spring training season the way football seems to think people are interested in pre-season games) of entertainment out of a baseball season each year.

Okay, let’s do a little baseball talk:

Baseball playoffs so far )

Anyway, since I have work tomorrow I don’t think I should stay up to review something tonight (besides baseball), so how about a meme?

Give me a character and I'll tell you:

A wish
An oh-god-please-don't-ever-happen
5 words to best describe them
My nickname for them

Between baseball playoffs and some technical difficulties with my entertainment system (such as it is, and no it's not the one use to watch baseball) it would appear that there will not be a review tonight. This makes it all the more iffy that I'll make it through TVD season 3 by the time s4 starts but I suppose there's still some chance.

(Ultimately I'm fairly satisfied with the way the games went, I'm just still not sure baseball needs another round of playoffs.)

No chance though of getting the next fic done before the new season starts. I have gotten some muses back the last couple days but this chapter/story is going to be pretty long, may even need multiple chapters in it (doesn't yet, but I have a lot more in mind to happen).

So in place of a review, how about a meme?

Send me a fandom and I will tell you my:

So NaNoWriMo starts up in a few days and I'm just not that excited this year. A couple weeks ago I was having fun thinking about what sort of story I would work on, but even that's pretty much faded. My muses have been really unfocused recently and this isn't pulling them together like I wish it would. I hope I can turn that around but right now I feel this might not be my year (and I was so hopeful I might finally manage it).

On a completely unrelated note, baseball is over for the season now. It sure went out with a bang though, and YAY CARDS (they may not be y team but I was rooting for them all series long, although I liked Texas, just not as much). Right now I'm glad it's over, but I think withdrawal will set in in a few weeks. Since I dislike or hate every other major sport I have nothing to fill the gap.

So "competitive" writing it will be...
