Since I doubt this is just me, I thought I'd pose it as a discussion question.

What ships do you guys have that when another ship, which you may or may not have an opinion on is compared to it, your feelings on the subject alter.

For some of my answers )

Okay so this came from some of the discussions of the shipping meme earlier in the week. However it's not about 'How canon is a ship' but bow willing I am to see characters with other people. As such, an experimental meme:

Name me a character and I will tell you:

1) Who I ship that character with and why.

2) How willing I am to view the character with other people in the:
-past
-present
-future

It occurs to me upon rereading my first answer that I didn't actually address the end question. I was just talking about non-canon ships that I've supported (and even then probably left some out). But now I'll deal with currently(ish) airing shows and who I want to get together, or am rather invested in the relationship of:

Brothers & Sisters: Kitty/Robert, Kevin/Scotty
Heroes: Peter/Claire (don't judge)
Pushing Daisies: Ned/Chuck
Ugly Betty: Betty/Daniel, Marc/Cliff
The Office: Jim/Pam
Merlin: Just about any combination of Merlin/Arthur/Gwen/Morgana/Lancelot
BSG: Adama/Roslin, Lee/Kara
Torchwood: Tosh/Owen, Gwen/Rhys, some Jack/Ianto

Oh, and I'd like to see more Doctor/Rose in any form as long as it's together.

That list is a pretty good example of my shipping habits, I largely go with canon but don't always. I go through phases of not following canon (Buffy, Harry Potter, Robin Hood) but my ratio is still tilted towards canon over all. And sometimes I just like lots or character and the cast has major chemistry and I don't really commit to any particular ship.

ETA: That's these days, there was a time not so long ago that I was pretty much against canon in habit. In fact during that phase I got into Doctor Who and was resistant to Doctor/Rose for a few episodes until WW3 when I fell completely, and probably did a decent amount for rekindle my ability and willingness to go with canon ships at the time. I blame my period of resistance to canon of Buffy/Harry Potter/Smallville/Veronica Mars, in all of which canon and I were not able to agree when it came to shipping, and I started to think canon very very seldom would so a relationship I could back.

Russel T. Davis people, rekindling my faith in television writers' perception of romance.

Oh where to start...

I basically ship nothing canon on Buffy, Angel is a slightly different story. My main Buffy ship was Buffy/Giles, still is for that matter, but I also like Buffy/Xander, and Xander/Willow (semi-canon at least) before anything canon.

Harry/Hermione, now and always. Also like Neville/Ginny some Ron/Luna and movie-verse Harry/Luna.

I'm not sure I can name anything on Doctor Who or Torchwood that I ship which isn't canon to some extent. Doctor Who because most things kind of pale next to Doctor/Rose which IS TOTALLY CANON (and has been written that way from day 1 basically) and Torchwood because really what *isn't* intentionally played with in canon? However for a long time I shipped Jack/Tosh, toyed with the idea of Jack/Donna and still enjoy the possibility to Jack/Donna (not that I dislike Jack/Ianto)

While I OTP Mulder/Scully, I also like the idea of Scully/Skinner.

Guy/Marian (Robin Hood), okay that one isn't exactly ignored by canon, but I really liked it. Oh and Robin/Much and if the writer's aren't doing it intentionally they are at least doing it consistently.

Back when I watched Smallville I shipped Clark/Chloe and Clark/Lex (about even at first, more Chlark by the time I stopped).

I ship Sam on SG1 with basically everyone and I'm sure they aren't all intentional. Jack, Daniel, Janet, Martouf, Cam, and Jonas all spring to mind pretty quickly.

And let's not forget my self-invented Rose Tyler/Daniel Jackson pairing that I absolutely love even if it's just in my head. There's no way that was intended by anyone.

I'm probably forgetting some, I am a compulsive shipper after all, but a good portion of the time I go for the canon ships, and when I don't it's the ones I think should be canon.
