Association Meme: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.
From
shinyopals we have:
1. Lots of BSG posts, even if I've never even watched an episode! XD
2. That icon of yours - you always use it!
3. Doctor Who
4. D/R as well!
5. Making fanvids.
1. Lots of BSG posts, even if I've never even watched an episode! XD
Well I have been in a BSG mood lately, along with Heroes it's what currently gets reaction posts out of me. It's so screwy and cracked out (but not in the happy RTD crack way of Doctor Who) that it prompts me to make posts about it's insanity.
I've had a couple people try to get my into Lost recently and I inform them that I really don't need another show like this at the moment. Although seeing as I've survived BSG I think I can probably eventually handle Lost (seriously Lost doesn't take year+ breaks between seasons or half seasons).
I think a lot of people should give BSG a try but I get that it's not for everyone. It's seriously dark and depressing (but again, not in the 'ow my heart just shattered but oh my god Rusty is such an awesome storyteller way we know and...lovish). To call the mytharc convoluted is putting it nicely (we're four eps from the end and only parts of it make sense even now). And even though I have ships on the show, some I'm even passionate about, they're all frakked up.
On the plus side you can start using frak.
2. That icon of yours - you always use it!
This one! Well it's my default icon and I have yet to find anything better that serves as a general 'hey it's me' statement. Also, I do not have a large number of icon spaces so I use them sparingly so I'm hesitant to shake things up.
Also, pixy stix are the semi-official food of roleplayers in my group, and since that's my big, non fandom, hobby I like to put it out there.
3. Doctor Who
Well obviously. I'm pretty sure that's how we met. And (for now) it's still my favorite currently airing show*. I just don't talk about it much because it often feels like others have discussed most thing I could say and usually said them better of funnier than I would.
*I'm not sure what it will be once Moff takes over. I'll have to start saying 'RTD-Who is one of my favorite now over shows' or just deny all knowledge of Moff-Who and act like it doesn't exist when talking about Doctor Who.
4. D/R as well!
More to the point, yeah that's how we met I'm sure. Because Doctor/Rose is love forever and ever (much like RTD I'm saying "YOU CAN NOT HAS MY SHIP. MINE").
But I'm still working my way through Journey's End acceptance, this has also kept me from doing a lot of posting on the subject for...a while now I guess. I've gotten more accepting of most of the aspects but I still feel kind of...wronged by it. But on my journey to be at peace with it, I am finally able to watch season 3 of Farscape again, even though it's giving me idea of a couple of things RTD could or should have done that would have helped me out a lot (I think from the perspective of it not happening).
5. Making fanvids.
I may actually be disappointed if people don't associate me with that since it's my main fandom activity; well that and posting random thoughts on the subject. Okay I may be a positive enough person to say people just associate me more with other things instead of thinking people hate my vids but I'm iffy on being positive about that. (After saying that, to people who haven't responded to my 'Oh me' replies to this meme: you don't have to unless it's something you deeply associate with me.)
Vidding is more or less my one creative fandom outlet. I only write fanfic occasionally and I'm not a graphics person (mainly due to my lack of possessing/understanding anything more graphical than MS-Paint). And at least sometimes I use it the same way people do fic, to tell a story; I just do it with songs.

Date: 2009-02-21 07:37 pm (UTC)I drunkenly complained about Moffat to my friends last night. They don't watch DW. But I also squeed about how they have to watch DW because RTD is a genius and he writes strong female characters and he created Captain Jack Harkness... I think my exact words about Jack were that RTD created a DW spinoff with the first very main character played by an openly gay man. And he's an omnisexual action hero! One of my friends was like "Was that the show with James Marsters and the kissing!" And, while he's never watched it, we squeed about the awesomeness of that.
I love how RTD and almost everyone involved in the show ship Doctor/Rose obsessively.
I love vidding too. I get stuck a lot and I'm insecure about all my videos, except like two, one because I think the timing and everything was flawless and the other because it got put up on this exclusive-ish Lost vidding site when they were rejecting almost every other Charlie/Claire video because way too many people were submitting them. Oddly, both are lost videos. Anyway, my problem is I think my vids are too generic and obvious and too similar to everyone else's, you know? And I lost almost all of the videos I made during my first year vidding thanks to the disc I saved them on getting scratched! And, then, some of my Farscape vids were burned to DVD but that's the one DVD that won't let me rip from it! I'm complaining way too much.
I have to go watch all your DW videos and comment about what I think. And I should upload some of my favorite videos of my own for my flist... Make like a master post or something. I'm too insecure to share most of them with anyone but I used to be a very prolific vidder.
I can't write fanfic and I make horrible graphics... But I understand exactly what you mean about vidding being your main creative outlet because it is really creative and, yeah, it's the one creative thing I can do, even if I don't do it that well... Yeah, now that I have a good internet connection, I'm off to procrastinate with the studying and upload a few of my favorite videos!

Date: 2009-02-21 09:30 pm (UTC)Complaining about Moffat and appreciating RTD's style (writing and daring characters) is a big part of Who these days. Of course I still can't quite stop describing Torchwood as the adventures of a partially clothed cyberwoman fighting a pterodactyl. Yes it only happened once but it's rather stuck in my mind.
There's definitely some of my early vids I think I should have been more cautious about. Some of them I'm just not happy with looking back on, but they're out there. But I guess I don't worry about generic too much (although maybe I should) because I watch a lot of fanvids and each one is really its own thing (well unless I'm completely sick of the song or something or there are clip choices I really have issues with and the more they show up the more annoyed I can become). I'd be happy to have your feedback on as many as you want to give it on though, and it would be nice to have more friends to talk vidding with.
I *can* write fic to some extent but...unless it's a small plot going into it (and sometimes even than) I end up spending loads of time plotting out massive long epic stories but still having no idea how to write them. And fanfic I a little more prone to the generic feeling you mentioned with vids. My epics would be another matter, but they never get written.

Date: 2009-02-21 09:38 pm (UTC)Same here. But I lost all of my earliest ones, so I can't really look back on them anyway. I worry about generic sometimes. Sometimes it can get repetitive when I do a bunch of vids for the same ship. Because I end up reusing clips and stuff. But, occasionally, I find a song that fits a show or character or ship in a really clever way and those are never repetitive and always fun!
I'll do that when I have time! I really need to start studying, but, instead, I've been going through my vids and uploading a lot more of them than I thought I would!

Date: 2009-02-21 09:50 pm (UTC)That I can identify with, a couple of my recent Doctor Who vids have come about in a deliberate attempt to do something different with them as a few of the ones leading up to that were kind of...similar in setup.
This is I "see" music a lot of the time. So I'm always coming up with new ideas even if they're similar to old ones (especially if there's not a huge number of clips to use). I've got so many half formed ideas at any given time that I just haven't figured out how to make the available clips work my brain gets a little cluttered.
When you get a bunch of your uploaded we could (I about said should but you do have studying) and watch each others and comment. Could be fun.

Date: 2009-02-21 10:22 pm (UTC)Me too! I always have several videos I'm working at at a time because my brain is always filled with different ideas. One of the videos I'm posting is to this song that was nagging me. I didn't know how to do a video to it, but it was like the song would get stuck in my head for absolutely no reason and it was like it was saying "make a Doctor/Rose video to me". I spent almost a month trying to ignore it until I gave in.
Sounds great! I should be free to start watching your videos sometime late next week. I have a whole bunch of stuff to do before Thursday, but, after that, I think it's just studying for exams. So I'll have time to start watching then! It could be fun! It's always nice to hear back from other vidders because we know more about it and can say more than, "Oh, I like this" or something like that, you know?

Date: 2009-02-22 08:18 pm (UTC)For me it's usually less a matter of trying to send it a way and more 'look I don't have room to work on you right now, can we want a bit?' But then I'm usually only working on one vid at a time for the sake of my poor slow and crowded hard drive.
We'll pencil vid talk in for next weekend maybe. Make an event of it. It does sound like fun the more I think about it. About the only time I talk about vids much with when I'm complaining to me beta viewer (let's call her) about the struggles I'm having with whatever I'm working on.
Oh...now I'm thinking of making a chart for my vid feelings. I'm a fan of charts. Even for things that are gut reactions like appreciation of art/creative endeavors.

Date: 2009-02-22 08:35 pm (UTC)I work on so many vids at a time because the inspiration kind of comes and goes.
Sounds fun to me! It'll definitely be easier to comment on your vids if I watch the show, but I'll watch all of them and try to comment as best I can.
I rarely talk about vids. I don't have a beta viewer. I used to have my now ex best friend watch my vids if she watched the show and she used to vid, but she was never really any help. I don't usually share my videos though. She was just always commenting about how much she loved them and how she wanted to steal my talent. It didn't come naturally at all to her and her vids were kind of awful (I swear, she just put random clips to music and they rarely fit the lyrics or the mood of the song or anything. Sometimes, mine don't exactly fit the lyrics all the time, but they go with the music and the mood and feelings the music evokes in me.), but I always lied to be nice about it because she was so proud of them. It would take her weeks to get a video done and it sometimes only takes me a matter of hours. But she was the person who showed me my first fanvideo ever and I was instantly like "I WANT TO DO THAT!" I generally don't comment about my struggles with them because, if I can't get a video to work, I just leave it for a while and come back to it. The inspiration usually returns eventually.

Date: 2009-02-22 09:23 pm (UTC)Agreed and the same, but I'll give it a go.
Of course no sooner did I post my earlier reply than I remember I might be out of town next weekend so we'll see.
I have a real life friend who also makes vids, but we have very different taste in shows and in vids, but we've each watched a few of each others and what we understand we usually like. My "beta viewer" is as more about encouragement that actually giving much...betaing, but I'm glad she does that anyway.
Of course the last time I tried to talk stuff with another vidder we really turned out to look at it differently. She's much more into the technical side, which I'm not denying can be a good thing to get feedback on, but at the same time part of what I want is to know if they hit the right emotional cord for people other than me. That and she wasn't really understanding of me being a WMM vidder it didn't seem.

Date: 2009-02-22 09:42 pm (UTC)Yeah, I might be busy studying for tests and writing papers next weekend. I'll see. I'll be out of town the weekend after that, but I definitely could download your videos beforehand and watch them some of the time that I'm home. We'll figure it out eventually
Yeah, I'm less about the technical stuff, more about the emotional part. The feeling that the video evokes is the most important part. Sometimes I try different technical stuff with different videos, but never anything fancy. And sometimes I just seem to ignore the technical stuff entirely. Besides trying to keep those tiny little clips from a different angle at the start or end of a clip out. You know, those little flashes of something else that you don't want in there? Yeah, those are the only technical things I get anally retentive about in my own vids. And I do use WMM, so there are a lot of fancy things I can't do. Of course, sometimes something in the clip will be timed just right in the show and it looks like I've done some technical magic when, really, it was just luck. I've used trial versions of other programs, but I can never figure them out. And I'm not going to pay for something I can't figure out. Plus I've been using WMM as long as I've been vidding.
