Donna thoughts

As long as it's been since I did the recap thing, it's been longer since I did anything approaching meta, but I have a few things I want to throw out there regarding Donna that hit me this week.


Alright, I am loving Donna, she's a fun character, and she's good for the Doctor, and she handles things well. I like that she's snappy and fights back but is a little bit cautious about TARDIS life.

But at the same time, I'm not sure what I *want* for her. What does she even want exactly? Rose, and Martha, and even Mickey and Jack I could boil it down and say I wanted them to find themselves, and they all did; but I don't feel that with Donna. Rose was looking for more, Martha for a break, Jack another chance (both times), and Mickey for a place to belong, but Donna...there's a bit of all that but something isn't fitting.

I think that's why her "forever" moment felt so out of place to me (besides that she's been uncertain about it before), why would she stay forever? I get that she doesn't think she could give it up I suppose, but I also don't feel like this is her life; I could see her doing it for a while, but I'm not sure what she was looking for going in that she's found now to keep her.

I don't want her to leave for any sort of "companions leave" reason, or as if "her time was up" or any of those style reasons, and I don't want her to leave soon (although I guess Tate isn't planning to stay that long), but I wish this wasn't bugging me so much, it's a gap in her characterization.

Yeah, I don't know. I love Donna, and I don't want her to go, but I know she must. But I can't figure out a good way for her to leave that doesn't involve dying, and I so don't want that for her. So I don't know in what way she could end up happy, at the end of all this.

Actually, I could probably think of ways for her to leave, sad to think though it is. Because...nothing feels wrong about her leaving still, because staying or going, I don't know what drives either at this stage. I don't know about ending happily exactly, but I don't think it has to be death, and I don't imagine RTD going there.

I'm just...at a slight gap in her characterization that's kind of bugging me.

I guess I could see her staying on another planet or getting her own ship

I think she does like it yeah, and wants to do more, but I just don't feel like it's something she'll want forever, for one thing I don't think she's been doing it long enough to know if it's a good fit for her. I do think she doesn't want to make a mistake again and leave before she's sure she wants out, but at the same time she has thought that before and so it kind of came out of nowhere.

Originally, I kind of wanted her to have the happily ever after ending: the Jo/Leela ending, where she met her dream man and settled down. I know that sounds awful; but I remember how happy she was in TRB when she was getting married and how excited she was that Lance asked her out on a date. I envisioned her traveling, having a great time, and then returning to Earth settling down.

However now, I have no clue. She clearly loves traveling with the Doctor and wants to "forever", so I have no clue, I foresee tragedy. =/

I agree there's something missing from her story; it flashes here and there, but I haven't quite got a handle on what she's looking for yet. Hopefully we'll find out as the series goes on!

I could kind of see that ending, what exactly it means that she's been willing to rush into relationships before I'm not sure, but it is there. But it's not something I expect exactly, not that that means it couldn't happen.

I hope so yeah, but we're nearly half over with the series now, and there's companion-palooza coming up which I'd like to know these things about characters going in to, because things are going to be jam-packed I'm sure. Still, can hope it becomes more clear.
