The shortest writing portion of the recap but the most pictures, does in fact cover the majority of the plot with a lot less random ranting (though still baffled by Tennant's hair this week).
-But poor Mr. Stoker, starts to be more that bitchy professor guy and gets killed, them’s the TV rules. And this being Doctor Who there had to be death, and usually of good and/or innocent people.

RIP Mr. Stoker whose life we knew more about in five minutes than we ever learned about Martha’s family, I don’t care if crazy lady tries to make you sound like a bad guy, I bet you were good.
-Bendy straw of evil, still weird, but still kind of awesome too.

-Space-rhinos, also kind of silly-awesome.

-I like the guy who took it upon himself to try and talk to the Jadoon.

He’s so much more awesome than Martha as far as I’m concerned, or maybe he just seems more real and therefore interesting. Random guy for companion.
-Squeaky marker to show human-ness.

There are lot of things in this episode that hit just right on the cheesy but awesome scale as far as I’m concerned.
-I like random guy a lot, I wish I knew what his name was (yes I later worked it out but I like that I loved him for so long even as “random guy”), and I can’t quite place who he reminds me of, but he does the smartest thing possible in this case, he tries to keep people calm and tries to understand what’s going on. He’s not exactly in the ass-kicking mold of companion, but he seems like he’d do well.

-Random guy looks sick at watching people die and he did nothing to stop it.

See, he could be so awesome a character. And seriously, who does this guy remind me of? Cause I know he reminds me of someone.
-That’s some wild hair the Doctor has there, it totally steals the scene.

But I’m not sure how interesting the rest was.
-The hand grabbing seems to be entirely for the purpose of steering and you can’t convince me otherwise. And even then I don’t think they hold hands as long as the beginning of ‘Rose’ even though they’re running longer. Way longer.
-Time Lord skeleton.

-Random Doctor-ness.

That’s so Doctor, particularly Ten, but Martha doesn’t find it very cute at all while I find it completely adorable. Enjoy the light fun while you can, it won’t last all season. “I look daft with one shoe,” snort.
-Barefoot on the moon. Time Lord feet.

The wiggly toes of Rassilon.
-“I love my sonic screwdriver.”

I was upset with the end of the sonic screwdriver, but even a sonic screwdriver can be replaced, the memories connected with that one aren’t going anywhere, so don’t tell me they’re thrown out with the sonic screwdriver.
-That’s an awkward leap to make from slabs travel in pairs to does the Doctor have a partner. But his response is just right.

He doesn’t want to talk about it, least of all right now, and he’s trying not to wish she was here.
-More running down corridors, more running out ahead of Martha.

There’s a lot of that in this episode; I like some running down corridors but this is getting silly.
-Maybe he needed to be a little more insistent that it meant nothing, not that he didn’t try. So...guy tells you it means nothing, kisses you, runs of and leaves you to distract space-rhinos, so of course you fall madly in love with him.

Gods I want her to see what he was like with Rose, I understand falling in love with that guy, I think a whole lot of us fell in love with that guy, I don’t understand this.
-I love his babbling at the Plasmavole. And I think there’s an interesting subtext in just how human he becomes in his cover story. He’s got this whole life invented for his babble, that the Doctor would even in a lie give himself a wife I consider a shout out to Rose and her influence on him, he thinks about domestic things even if without her he doesn’t do them.

-Funny man laughing on purpose at the darkness, yeah that’s pretty much true.

But it’s worse when he stops laughing, and dives into the darkness. But seriously even when enemies who only know him when he’s lying through his teeth can see that he needs to find some peace and right now the only way he can is in death, that’s saying something.
-Space-rhinos are still bureaucrats, I enjoy that.

Bureaucracy is universal. Sad, but probably true.
Alright, that didn't take long, hopefully getting part 3 up will go as smoothly, either way probably later this afternoon.

Date: 2007-07-15 10:55 pm (UTC)I guess that could make for an interesting fanfic, but I just have not much interest in writing for Martha. I'd have to write her the way I thought she was going to be before the series unfolded, and that would justifiably be dinged as writing her out of character.

Date: 2007-07-16 10:05 pm (UTC)I'm not sure I really expected that, particularly early season episodes don't tend to be hanging a gun on the wall so it can be used later set ups. Character, themes, big plot points yes, Jadoon compensation, not so much. That said you're right, it would have been funny if it had been it had been a quick solution to some problem down the road.

(nods) I have several fics on the back burner (I'm terrible about starting things and then never finishing them) with non-canon-Martha and she's so much more interesting than canon-Martha. Of course I've completely forgotten the plot I was going for in those fics though most of them were going to turn into reunion fics at some point because I couldn't not do reunion fic, but even if stuff I consider now, I can't write her "in character" and manage her perspective; but the Martha I wanted to see, her I can write.
