Catching up on some MCU thoughts

Thoughts on the newest Endgame trailer...is it, they’ve stepped up the press stuff so much the last few days I don’t know that they didn’t have another one, but I’m mostly done watching previews.

I didn’t really like the ‘Whatever it takes’ trailer, that one really failed to grab my interest. Which is kind of terrible since I know I’m going to see the movie and I’m just watching the trailers to keep my interest and excitement high instead of to create such excitement. So when instead it kind of killed my excitement, it left a sour taste in my mouth.

Now, while this one isn’t as good as the initial moody teaser that got me and so many others super pumped, it worked a lot better for me that that trailer. I’m not quite back to hyped, but I’m back to ‘of course I’m going to see it, and it will probably be pretty good.’

For the first time I find myself actually worried about Tony. Of course people kept speculating that he’s going to die, but I always gave him better survival odds that Cap; and I guess I still do, I’m just finding my odds for either them lower, but since I’m so convinced Cap is going to die I don’t really feel much worry on that front. I will be more angry if he goes back and ends up with Peggy, because aside from the fact I never shipped it to start with I think it reduces both of their character journeys for that to be where they end up. But back to Tony, showing that he does make it back to Pepper, makes me more worried about him not ultimately coming back at the end.

I also feel kind of annoyed that it’s Tony who asks Cap if he trusts him. Tony never betrayed Cap; they disagreed about the Accords yes, but it’s Cap that needs to re-earn trust after the crap he pulled. Maybe it will be framed more as ‘Are you going to trust me on this?’ which could stand as Steve actually listening to and respecting Tony for once, but my first instinct was to want to slap Cap around a bit.

Thoughts on Captain Marvel

I did go see Captain Marvel opening week, but I didn’t really have much to say about it. I didn’t particularly like the movie, and I thought Carol was kind of the worst thing in it. I never could make up my mind if she was badly written, badly acted, badly directed, or just miscast from the start but I could not connect with her character at all. The rest of it was kind of a mixed bag, and not enough Coulson; I don’t think it deserves either the hate or the praise that it’s getting from various corners. It was fine movie that I personally felt was pretty mediocre (and not just because I often don’t like origin movies).

I think part of my problem is that I don’t want Carol to be in Endgame. This movie should be about the connections between the characters that have come together and grown together and viewers have a long running relationship with. If Captain Marvel had been made a couple years ago, say in place of Doctor Strange, I might have felt better about it (I didn’t particularly like Doctor Strange either, see previous comment about origin movies), but now it feels rushed and forced so that she can be part of the next movie, and I don’t like that feeling.

Thoughts on Agents of SHIELD sneak peek

Why is fandom not writing all the Philinda spec angst fic? That scene clearly left off just before May comes around and sees what may or may not be the love of her life but certainly looks like him. And I cannot wait until we get to see that moment; I’m glad this must mean it’s happening in the first episode, because that’s a moment I’m super excited to see. Personally I’m going to go on living in denial and thinking Coulson’s just undercover until I have to watch them explain another option. And I think we’ll know how much of Coulson is in whatever person we see here by his reaction to May. Either way, delicious angst is coming (although as much as I like angst I tend to be of the opinion that it’s only good if the end result is a happy ending).

Apparently the show is premiering much sooner than I had expected when I wrote my thoughts on the trailer. That’s good. However I don’t have time to rewatch all of the previous seasons before they come back (that’s...well I’d rather have the early premier than a full rewatch). So I’m debating how much to rewatch in the next month or so; season 4&5 seem the most likely, I probably have time for three seasons, but I am not going to watch s3 unless I’m watching the whole show. Review project has died a pretty quick death unfortunately, but maybe once we start getting new material my head will get back in this fandom zone.
