So I'm waiting to see if I want to review any other shows this week besides Legends and Agents, but warning now, the Legends reaction was...incoherent rage over Rip leaving that I have since tried to add more thoughts to. Then I felt the need to do the LoT writers a solid and rewrite the relevant scene so it made a bit more sense.

I'm not even doing the normal header this time, this is pure reaction, barely self-edited and probably only the first time I'll write this differently but in this case I kept it close to what it actually was in canon, just with more sense.

--I used a lot of the same concepts, including what I think they might have been going for with why Rip left, but I gave him an actual reason for going and a better send off. I even acknowledged that Gideon probably has an opinion on this shit even if that actual discussion happened off screen/page. And for the sake of making it acceptable in canon I did not acknowledge that anyone is in love with anyone else, in fact I didn’t use the word love anywhere in this fic; nor do they have any other physical contact than happened in the actual scene (except a more lingering handshake). Feel free to pretend this is what actually happened--

Rip kept a tight hold on the bag slung over his shoulder as he walked out into the empty corridor. He didn’t make it five steps before someone approached from around the bend in the hall, cutting off his attempt to leave quietly. Of course it was Sara, at once entirely unforeseen and completely to be expected. “Hey, you going on a trip?”

He stopped suddenly in his tracks, his face fell briefly before he affixed a not entirely convincingly composed look on it. “Yes, in fact,” he replied as he turned to face her.

The lightness he could see had been on Sara’s own face hardened into confusion. “I was joking,” she said.

“Oh. I had thought perhaps Gideon sent you to talk me out of going,” he explained.

“Gideon?” Sara said, clearly addressing the ship’s AI.

“Captain Hunter has decided to go on walk-about,” Gideon informed her other captain.

Sara looked at Rip clearly not understanding, and it made him feel like he needed to squirm under her consideration. “And you didn’t tell me?” she asked.

Rip wasn’t sure if that was addressed to him or Gideon so he shook his head slightly even as Gideon answered for herself. “Mr. Hunter wished to leave without anyone knowing, Captain Lance.”

Sara’s eyebrow raised at the AI’s deliberate choices in modes of address, and now Rip was definitely squirming. “This team has functioned far better in my absence than it ever did under my leadership. You saved reality itself.”

“You were there too,” she hurried to assure him.

He shook his head slightly, unable to properly express himself in a way she would understand. “The team saved reality, and I’m not part of the team, Sara; I never was.” She looked at him like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing, but let him continue without interruption. “I’m not a Legend,” he told her, referring to their conversation a few days ago, “I don’t really know what I am anymore.”

“That’s what the Legends are,” she told him, stepping towards him and he instinctively shifted back as much as he thought he could without being obvious. He was quite obvious and she stopped before coming any closer. “We’re all trying to figure things out, Rip; so that means you fit right in.”

He shifted his weight back towards her to make up for backing away from her a moment earlier, his grip still tight on the ruck-sack he carried. “You believe that, and I appreciate that you do, more than you know. But you have all had the choice to leave at any time, and right now that’s what I need to do. See if I can find myself out there before finding a new place here/”

There was understanding in her look finally, but also sadness that he more than understood as he felt it himself. “But you were just going to go, without even saying goodbye?”

“Apparently there was no need as you found me out anyway.” Unsaid is the fact that she was the only one aside from Gideon he believed would care about his leaving.

Sara glared at him, ether for his actual words or the unspoken meaning. “Rip,” she chided him.

He stepped towards her finally; and unlike him, she didn’t back away. He knew his look at her was soft and fond but he made no effort to hide it. “I don’t want to say goodbye, Sara,” he told her, certain she would understand that. “I’m only taking my leave.”

“You know, you helped me figure out who was when I was lost,” she said, meeting his gaze, “I would be there for you.”

“I know,” he assured her with a nod. “And perhaps one day...” he trailed off and she nodded with him. “But for now, permission to depart, Captain Lance?” he asked, extending his hand which she grasped in a firm shake that at least one of them was slow to let go.

“Permission granted.” After a long moment their hands still clasped she added, “Any idea where you’re going?”

Rip shook his head. “I was planning to take the jump ship and see...I suppose where time takes me.” He finally slid his hand out of hers and locked it again around the strap of his sack.

“You’re stealing my jump ship?” she teased lightly.

“It appears I am; I suppose Mr. Rory has had some effect on me,” he responded in kind.

“I want it, and you, back in one piece; when you’re ready to come home, of course.”

Rip swallowed around an entirely predictable lump in his throat. “Aye, aye, Captain.”

He started to turn away but Sara wouldn’t yet let him drift away. “Don’t get in too much trouble out there.”

“I’ll leave the trouble to you lot.”

As he turned and walked away, he thought he was finally going to get the last word, but Sara was apparently unable to let him have it. “You are part of this family, Rip;” she told his back as he left her behind, “anytime you need us, we’ll be there.”

Rip turned at the far end of the hall and looked back at her for the last time for the foreseeable future. He only nodded, neither needing nor trusting himself to have anything more to say.
