Alright, a rather detailed recap of my feeling about The Sound of Drums, in fact this is just part 1.

1. I find it rather amusing that pretty much all episode, the Doctor and Jack walk/run side by side and Martha is always separate.

Yes this is noteworthy as far as I’m concerned because I laugh at all evidence that Martha, the season long companion, is now secondary sidekick (and she was always sidekick rather than partner or at least equal character, but now she's the second sidekick).

2. The Doctor is so ticked off that the Master got married and Rose is in another universe. He’s like “The Master and his *wife*?” while he’s totally thinking “Damn, she’s even *blond*, why can’t I have that?”

Notice how he zeroes in on Lucy, and on them kissing, I tell you, couples are the Bad Wolf this season.

3. Yep, still squeeing about John Barrowman’s name in the credits.

4. So, this is like four days after ‘The Lazarus Experiment’ and they’ve had elections (not mentioned in TLE), Saxon has become Prime Minister already (I don’t know how it works in England, do these things happen that quickly?), and Tish has gotten a new job. Must have been a busy few days, maybe no one had time to wonder where Martha was.

5. I’m also rather impressed that Downing Street has been rebuilt exactly the same as before, and they even made thee fireplace in the cabinet room look old, like it had always been there. See?

Yes I know *why* it’s this way because they were filming in the same location, but I find it funny to think about without those concerns (Watsonian perspective is fun).

6. Saxon in the cabinet room however was awesome. I wondered for a bit if he was calling them traitors to their race, but I guess he just meant it politically. And his facial expressions were hilarious.

Happy...

Not Happy...

and then there was the finger tapping of doom.

All around great scene.

7. Ah, no reply at Torchwood, but confirmation that the Doctor didn’t know about the Jack-Torchwood connection before (obviously important later in the episode, but I remember noting it the first time through). Because who else *would* Jack be calling in this situation? But he didn’t say Torchwood, he said friends.

He should have called Rhys to see where Gwen was.

8. Oh and here I thought Martha would hear her mother’s message from TLE about how the Doctor was dangerous, but no it’s Tish and her new job (which she obviously got after TLE), so does Martha’s phone play messages in reverse order? On closer inspection it also says she has 24 messages, so maybe people have been calling and wondering why she’s not at work or calling them back, but it just magically started with Tish’s message but still Martha ignores it.

9. I had no idea where they were going with the scene between reporter lady and Lucy until it became clear that reporter lady was there for *serious* reasons. And even then, the real turn of the scene was a surprise, not to show that the Master was evil, but to show that the Master and Lucy were both evil and that she was his faithful companion (especially when I just wrote a line in a fic idea about the Master referring to Rose as the Doctor’s faithful companion). Look, they even hug...

10. Because everything you read on the internet is truth right?

Martha, the Master is a genius, a Time Lord, and has access to the TARDIS even if it can’t travel in time, it’s possible he could have faked his Saxon back-story. Alright, maybe I’ll give her some latitude this time due to the mesmeric influence, but it’s only a small amount of wiggle room.

11. The Master’s “Did I say 100%, I meant 99, 98…” was so Ten sounding. Yes I’m sure they’re doing the dark mirror of the Doctor on purpose, but it’s still kind of scary to see it.

12. I worry about the fact the Doctor said he locked the TARDIS coordinated *permanently*.

And if the Master hadn’t managed to repair them in all this time, I worry that’s actually true. Maybe the Master didn’t try to hard because things worked out okay here, but I worry.

13. Is the cinematography in Martha’s flat intentionally off? Like maybe to convey that they’re being watched or something? But the angles are awkward. See what I mean?

14. This “Vote for Saxon, he’s good” reminds me on a plot on ‘Lois and Clark’ where it was “Vote for John Doe, he’s a really great guy.” Took me a while to remember what it was, but I *knew* I’d seen it used someplace before (actually, probably more than that, but that’s the first one I managed to remember).

15. Why exactly did the Master tip them off that he was threatening them? Just being the evil and gloating like he said he wouldn’t be last week?

16. *Finally* Martha puts her family before just doing what the Doctor says. Even if it has consequences, it always does, and she finally had her own character separate from her crush on the Doctor.

Also, I love the fact that the Doctor made *sure* to grab his coat on the way out.

17. Oh it turns out Clive is the brave/strong/smart one in the family, who would have thought? And I can’t decide if Martha was smart for realizing something was wrong with her mom’s story or stupid for not picking up on the hint that there was something wrong with her mom’s story. Anyway, go Clive.

Part 2 will be up later.
