TVD-ish question

Question for my TVD friends (what remains of you all on lj), if I was to decide to start catching up on things finally, could I just watch The Originals and leave TVD for a later date? I may have enough desire to return to this messed up verse for my dysfunctional Mikaelson siblings, but I'm not geared up to deal with the Mystic Falls crew. But if the plots from last season are interconnected I may try both if need be.

You can just watch TO! There's no need to catch up with both. They're very much standalone at the moment.

I am going back to last season, I just ran out of give-a-damn juice for this verse after s5/s1. But I may have found enough to give one show another try.

I'm pretty sure there haven't been any crossovers lately. And probably the last ones were contained in TVD. So you're probably good just watching TO. Though that show is a hot mess right now. And was last season too. IMO.

These shows are always hot messes, it's just a question of whether they're fun messes or not. And obviously they stopped being for me a while ago (even before I threw in the towel) I'm just starting to get curious if there might be another chance, not reel hopeful, but curious enough to consider it.

There was a crossover last season, which was contained to TVD. (And may have just been way to put a pin in any crossover ships.) This season, the shows are self-contained. The plots on both shows are similar, but you don't have to watch one to watch the other.

All crossover ships are just the ones that were at all likely? because my crossover ship has been a pin cushion for a while now.

Of course if I start getting an itch to write crossover fic I'd feel compelled to be caught up on both...

Caroline and Klaus had sex in the woods. That was the biggest "put a pin in it" moment that I recall. I think other characters spoke, but nothing serious. And none of it has been spoken about or mentioned since. TVD has more or less forgotten the siblings and TO has forgotten everyone in TVD.

Well that was in s5, I saw that episode, unless it happened again. It's s6/s2 and so far with s7/s3 that I haven't seen. And I know the end of TVD-s5 has had bearing on characters come back into TO, but I watched to that eventually (and thought it was a natural end point for TVD as it even faded to white instead of black).

But it sounds like they much have been pretty separate since then if that's what you're thinking of.

I haven't been watching TVD for years now (since season 5) and it doesn't feel lacking with The Originals.
