I generally consider "Love and Monsters" the worst episode of DW season 2, but I rank "Blink" as one of the best (though not the best, and the season isn't over yet so this could change) of season 3, but really why?

Thing is, I do like Love and Monsters, or I like bits of it, I even *adore* bits of it more than I liked anything in Blink. Jackie is totally awesome, LINDA is really pretty cute, pretty much every second with the Doctor and Rose is adorable (I for one, and possibly one of few, enjoyed the Scooby Do chase at the beginning).

Blink had a villain that was actually scary as opposed to stupid (you've got to wonder how these things exist, but that's an alien problem as opposed to just being a dumb idea and dumber in execution), the one-off characters were on the whole better, the dialog was sharper. It involves time paradoxes that I usually love but in this instance lead to character problems in my mind if nothing else, but worse, it didn't have the heart, it didn't have Jackie, it didn't have Rose's compassion for Elton at the end or the Doctor's "gift" (and we might not see it as that, but I think it's clear RTD meant us to).

But I think the difference, more than love for Sally and hatred of the Absorbaloff, is this season I needed a break. A break from the Doctor's soul crushing angst and decent into darkness, a break from Martha's uselessness and whining. I didn't need a break last year, I wanted to go with them on the adventure, see the stars with their eyes, go anywhere with them because I loved them; this year, the fun is gone, the joy is gone, the love is gone and only the monsters are left.

I miss the love.

Yes, exactly. I was telling someone else that at least part (but not nearly all) of the reason I loved Blink so much is because the previous weeks, while truly excellent, were also frigging depressing. So, yeah. Great break and totally necessary. And loads of fun Doctor moments, even though he wasn't in it very much.
