Here's last week's TV round up, as I have to concede that I don't have NaNo ses this year, I guess there will be one next week.
Downton Abbey 6x06
While I like Talbert better than Mary’s previous suitors since Matthew, I still don’t really like them together; come on Evelyn, you’re running out of time to so something besides look mournful about her never going for you. While I’m not sure what’s up with Daisy, I suspect it would be reasonable to assume it had to do with worlds colliding or something like it; but I’m not quite sure where this is going. Edith/Pellum continues to be fine with me, and while the Carsons’ relationship problems make sense it isn’t a lot of fun to watch. While in this case I do feel Thomas is being misjudged (because he obviously is, but I also think he’s honestly okay being friends with Andy), I can’t say I dislike Carson for not really trusting Thomas at his word; he’s spent far too much time over the last couple decades making his word not mean a whole lot. Tom’s clear desire to be in a bromance with Talbert is kind of hysterical. Also Mary’s continued lack of maternal inclination to George can still make me laugh. As for the plot of the episode...I guess it was okay, but it was clanging the approaching finale gong pretty hard.
The Muppets 1x03
Seemed like a good time to give this another try and I think I may have liked this episode better than the first couple. I don’t know if my expectations were different, my mood was different, or it was just a better episode, but it certainly seemed like a better episode. Aside from Chip the IT guy, that was just annoying.
Agents of SHIELD 3x05
I wish I liked this episode, I wish it wasn’t proving me wrong about every time I’ve complained about the story structure on OUaT (there’s plenty else to object to over there still), because this episode was boring as hell. It doesn’t help that the day-for-night filters utterly failed to convince me it was dark and foreboding out there. It doesn’t help that I’m still not convinced Will isn’t a psycho killer in all this and things progressed to fast for the viewer to buy him and Jemma’s relationship. It doesn’t help that it took them so long to explain the massive battery on the phone that I spent the first half of the episode constantly asking how Jemma’s phone still worked. It doesn’t help that I don’t think this at all tracks with Jemma’s behavior since she got back until now. This was not a good episode; although Fitz’s reaction in the end did work for me, but it wasn’t worth all the mess to get there.
Flash 2x04
No sooner do I go on a bit last week about the show not doing great with its female character do we get this week, which is pretty good for both Caitlin and Iris. And maybe even for Patti, who I went through a few phases of thoughts on this time; starting with being super suspicious, through a phase of thinking they are trying a bit too hard to make her the Felicity of this show, to thinking maybe she’s okay for now but I’m still not sure I’ll trust her long term. I was trying to work out what mysterious West sibling would turn out to be only to realize it’s probably Wally (btw Iris, either way you have a brother in this, it’s a question of full or half); I’m not sure the ages work out right t be Wally as I know him (mostly knowing the Young Justice version) but probably workable for whatever this show is doing with the character. Where was Jay this episode, building something else in another sub-basement? The team has gotten too big since they can’t account for everyone anymore.
Arrow 4x04
That was a pretty good episode, maybe not great but pretty good. I’m quite sure what they’re going for the technical issues in the new lair, it seemed like more than growing pains. Now that I understand it’s supposed to be Ray trying to contact Felicity, I’ll be curious how this plot is played out. I’d kind of forgotten about Ray this season apart from knowing he’d have to come back for LoT at some point, but emotionally I had no connection to whether or not Ray showed up again. It was a good Lance episode, although Laurel continues to be pretty stupid about what she’s done (also how did they make the trip to and from Nanda Parbat a – in the time they had and b – without anyone else on the team knowing about it; the Palmer Tech plane in the only way I can see them getting Sara there and back. I still think Darhk is going to turn out to be Felicity’s father even though she didn’t react to seeing him with Lance as if it was, I can still assume he’s changed looks in the last 20 years, even though this theory has never really accounted for why Darhk would hook up with Donna. Why aren’t they using Malcom’s money he gave Thea to run the Team Arrow operations so Felicity doesn’t have to use so much of Palmer Tech money? Contributing to her boyfriend’s mayoral campaign would be slightly understandable, especially when he probably still has long ties to the company himself, but not everything would have to be done that way. I wish we could have seen Oliver tell Thea he was going to ask Felicity to marry him, that would have been a nice scene; but I did like the stuff this episode. In fact, even though I’m still not so jazzed about how we got here, Thea was pretty good this episode all around.
Once Upon a Time 5x04
That episode was super boring, I may have to go and watch the next one just to see if there’s something annoying going on that could get some reaction besides boredom. And it shouldn’t have been this boring, the Camelot political mess should at least be intellectually interesting even if I’m not emotionally invested, but it’s not. I was also distanced by the fact that the timeline makes no sense as Snow and Charming knew an already exiled Lancelot more than 30 years ago not five, but I might give it a smidgen of leeway as OUaTiW also seemed to say that times don’t always work the same between realms; but only because I like OUaTiW so much (I should rewatch it at some point). It does make me laugh a bit however that now whenever I note that the Camelot set looks super fake it can be explained by being built by lies and fairy dust (rather than just bad CGI).
Once Upon a Time 5x05
Well that was a better episode, certainly left me less bored, but I’m not sure I have anything I actually want to discuss about it. I’m not sure if it was a better than average episode or just so much better than the last one, but it seemed to carry some weight to it. Although Morrison’s acting is still not equipped to carry this plot.
