How did you get into fanvidding?

Well, I pretty much always had a part of me that tried to fit songs to shows/characters/ships I love. I loved seeing in my head the song sentiments being applied to things I enjoy fandoning. Maybe one day I’ll actually try and make vids to some of the songs that screamed out for say a Mulder/Scully interpretation ever since I was a teenager.

Of course in the abstract you can image a word here and there being different to make it fit just right what you want the characters to say, or dream up a situation that they didn’t really get into in canon but would apply to some AU version of events, but the important thing was that I heard characters in the music.

Now let’s skip forward to when I started college and REALLY got into fandom for the first time (I’d only ever been able to skirt the edges of it from home before that; slow internet, hovering parents, etc.). My big fandom at that point became Buffy (I like to make a joke of the fact that I watched Star Trek as a kid, B5 as a teenager, Buffy in college, and TVD in my late 20s, this progression seems largely backwards doesn’t it? But now I’ve dived back into B5 and damn I love this show [/tangent]), and Buffy had a pretty wide vidding community for its time. Now, there may have been few vids for my ship of choice but I got them all and gradually I cast my net wider because I just enjoyed watching fanvids.

By the end of college, several flirted with fandoms and a growing library of vids I kept on hand later, I finally decided to give it a try for myself. And while my first vids were Star Wars (my reasons for being into SW at the time – and why my user name is what it is – are a whole different story), I think I always knew it was Doctor Who that drew me in. A ship I loved and wanted to express all my feelings for, and so few of my fic ideas were able to take shape, but around the lyrics of a song I could give voice to those feelings.

Vidding was my way of communicating in fandom for quite a while. When I had feelings on a subject matter, I went to make a vid that captured them. But somehow, of late it’s gotten harder to do that, though I have been doing better about writing fic and just babbling about fandom so I’m not feeling cut off from anything aside from my vidding muses. If it was just that I’d gotten into TVD and the things I care about are a little hard to vid that would be one thing, but I just can’t seem to find much vid-voice for anything lately, and I do miss it a decent amount of the time.
