I didn’t love it, but I liked it.

The Originals 1x08

I suspect that a fair amount of liking has to do with Rebekah putting Tyler down within the first five minutes. But he was still there being an asshole so that would knock it down a bit; still limited Tyler is a vast improvement over lots of Tyler from last time.

I’m surprised Klaus won the game this early in the series. But I thought for sure Marcel and Rebekah would have put together more of a plan than a beat down to take him out. I could see the flaws in that coming just in their discussion of keeping him in the cellar for decades, you’re going to need to do more than just lock him up and I figured those two, especially Rebekah would know that. Even assuming you can’t find a witch capable and willing to do the desiccation spell an attack like this require more than man power.

I really wanted to see Rebekah win for an episode or two, because watching her stand up to Klaus was glorious. I’m glad she got to see the loophole in Klaus’s offer and save Marcel in the end, shows that she is a player in the game but not always so good at overt moves.

I can’t decide if we were supposed to feel bad for Klaus getting beat up or not, which may mean it was done well in not trying to force judgment on viewers or may mean it was just unclear what they were going for. Because it’s really hard to feel very sorry for him at this point, plus you knew they couldn’t really do him that bad of harm, so I really didn’t feel bad.

Similarly I’m not sure what the takeaway was meant to be for the last family scene. I kind of feel like everyone is in the wrong here. Because Klaus’s statements of how he feels betrayed do carry some weight, but not so much as they would if Klaus didn’t keep giving everyone reasons to doubt his intentions and capacity for humanity. Also might have had more weight if he had been bowing to Elijah’s orders in apology for more than three days before biting him. And his stated case against Rebekah was even flimsier; making it about her relationship with Marcel and how she’s making a mistake again when the consequence of it so far has been because of Klaus daggering her.

I think I need to see more about how Cami’s story plays out before judging it. Because on a lot of levels I love seeing stories of people battling against mind control to tell themselves what’s happening (although that it took her a while to think ‘hey this doodle clearly in twin code in my pocket might be a message’ makes me roll my eyes), but I clearly don’t know all that it’s leading to yet.

The flashbacks just further prove Klaus is a dick. But I did enjoy the danger of Elijah confronting the lady that staked him. Most of that plot requires me to break this off into a new section.

So, let’s talk about shipping, specifically how this all still works just fine for my preferred shipping.

This isn’t to say this thing between him and Hayley isn’t a thing. I actually found it less objectionable this episode than I have in a lot of them in fact. But I don’t see this thing as an incredibly deep thing. I think they’re both very confused and torn between affection for each other and fear of Klaus, but without the baby to draw them together and Klaus to give them something to fear I don’t think they’d make it more than three dates before they realized they have nothing in common. It’s sad this is probably the most mutual and honest relationship Elijah’s had in quite a while and its pretty much doomed to failure on all levels.

If I actually liked it, that tragic element might be enough to draw me in. But I want them to be family rather than anything else.

But it’s not them not working (that’s still mostly opinion and I already had it) that I say fit in with my shipping tastes. It shows what I’ve been speculating on all along, that it’s entirely possible that part of the reason Elijah never went after Elena was because of Klaus

Because when I stop and think about it, the only times Elijah has pretty clearly displayed his feelings for Elena were when a) Esther was supposedly in control of the family, b) Klaus was out of commission and Elijah intended to leave him that way until Elena couldn’t be hurt. S2 doesn’t really count, sure he was falling for her but he wasn’t really putting it out there; and s4 it’s only the scenes between Elijah and Elena where it’s still there, otherwise he throws Katherine in front of Klaus to assume he cares about.

And Katherine is a pretty effective tool to throw Klaus off the idea that Elijah wanted Elena, Klaus would surely conclude that anything he had suspected on that front was doppelganger issues rather than Elena specifically. And when Elena was human Elijah was mostly content to love her from afar and now that she’s a vampire he’s got time to wait until she’s left the Salvatores behind and Klaus won’t be Klaus about the idea. Hayley and the baby need his attention and protection now.

I always want Elena to show up n TO because I think it would be awesome, but I’ve nursing the idea for a while that it would be an interesting experience for both Elena and Hayley to see Elijah put someone else above them (I figure you could get both in there at different times), and Elijah himself in the middle; and Rebekah to mock them all from the sidelines.

If they can strike this balance, feeding my shipping headcanon and make E/H palatable in the same episode I at least won’t get any more frustrated with this choice of the show. I also approve of Elijah angst, even if it isn’t the Elijah angst I necessarily want. Plus Elijah/Celeste was quite nice before Klaus tragiced it, nice Elijah flashback ships would be good by me.

I really enjoyed the family dynamics in this episode. They all carry their fair share of guilt and pain and fear and rage, and it's so interesting to see the different ways that they deal with that.
