Hmm...so I watched it the night it aired...whatever.

TVD 5x06

Have to say, I really didn’t like this episode very much. It wasn’t rage inducing at any point, and the Katherine and Caroline plot was pretty good by and large, and the Amara twist was a pretty good one, but on the whole I just feel meh about it.

The Good

-Katherine and Caroline teaming up, I’ve been wanting more of them interacting since s2 and we did get some violence and then we got teamwork.

-Amara chooses herself over Silas. Really I’m looking forward to Amara in general now that she’s here.

-Elena telling off Tessa, I think we all know I approve of any time Elena gets to express feelings being the Triangle and is a real damn character again.

(Hmm, I notice a definite doppelganger theme to the good parts of the episode...probably not a coincidence.)

The Bad

-More of the fated love nonsense. Elena needs to break this whole thing and run off with someone else entirely (say running off to NO to join a better show or taking a page from Amara’s book and choosing her own humanity without her epic love). Plus it ignores that Stefan/Katherine could be just as “fated” if that’s what’s going on here. Tessa seems to be the only one who actually considered that back when she gave them both dreams about it and that barely counts since she insists on only speechifying about Stefan/Elena.

-Giving Stefan back his memories as a punishment. Well it is for me I suppose (starting to kind of like amnesia-Stefan and think there could be some real character development done through it if given time? psych). Also, let’s totally ignore all the things Stefan has done that actually deserve to make him keel over in pain when he remembers, let’s just make it about the damn Triangle. I’m hardly a Stefan fan at the best of times, but I really wish he could be more than this.

-Um...show you can’t bleed a guy practically dry and have him up and walking around three minutes later. This is worse than the end of s3 with Klaus taking so much of Elena’s blood and her a) walking it and a head injury off b) no one giving her vamp blood afterward until Meredith did c) but giving her alcohol. When I was writing TTESIT I did a quick google search on the effects of blood lose, and if I can do better research for a fanfic in five minutes you can damned well do at least that good for your show. It bugs me, which is why I still haven't forgiver it in s3 I suppose.

The Waiting-to-see

-So now we have three ND characters running around, but we *still* don’t get Tatia. I want Tatia damn it. Yes her story is tied heavily in with the Originals for obvious reasons but if we’re going to really get into this doppelganger heavy story let’s finally get her in there.

-Katherine’s story. There’s going to have be a little more explanation and exploration before I know if I like it or not, beyond just approving of Katherine getting storyline.

-The stuff we learn about the Whitmore Society, while I approve of learning more we still don’t know enough to form much opinion. This plot would be so much more interesting if it were the A-plot of the stories instead of stuck as a B-plot.

-I guess I can grant that it wouldn’t be Caroline’s first idea the Dr. whats-his-face has Jesse, but I would like there to be some forward motion on that front.

I probably could comment on some of the character's actual behavior and whether I approve of it or don't, but I was so bored by the story here that I really cant be bothered.

Really for a season that started me off thinking it was on the verge of being an apocalyptic story about Silas mind-whammying the whole world to do his bidding, this story feels so small now. Especially when alternating with The Originals; while can be seen as a small and petty revenge story but feels grandiose and important and moving. Stuff is happening on TVD, but nothing feels impactful. Really, the Silas plot has the same flaw as the Originals’ hanging around did, the show’s leads make no sense in the bigger story that’s happening around them; they’re made just pawns in the schemes of the bigger players; and I think it’s even worse than it was during the Originals’ seasons. The ancients are going to do what they’re going to do with or without involving the main characters and give even less of a damn about them than the Originals did.

Which is why the Whitmore plot is so much more interesting than the Silas one. Firstly it only involves the Salvatores tangentially and is focused on Elena and Caroline and now Katherine and should be kept that way because I want the better characters to get this one without the trolls. For two, it actually makes sense that in involves and effects them, and that it’s only becoming an issue now. It’s just better, so I shouldn’t be surprised the show treats it as secondary to the meh to bad plots.
