The Originals reaction post

It’s about time.
The Originals 1x04
That’ll teach me to always assume the writers forgot their own canon. In the opening I was thinking about how unless Marcel had a stash of white oak ash around this dagger experiment was a bad idea, and low and behold the writers were on the same page. Doesn’t mean I’ll have that much more faith in them next time a possible continuity gaff situation comes up.
Dear gods the amount of casual compulsion thrown around in this episode is staggering. I’m surprised Cammi (how about I pick a different spelling every episode? Speaking as a person with a regularly misspelled name I should probably just find out which one she uses) has any brain power left after how much Klaus messed with it. They’re going to have to turn her into a vampire down the road just undo all the damage Klaus has done (and since she’s clearly this show’s Caroline I’m pretty much expecting it). I hope she didn’t need that brain power for classes.
This was a good episode for developing both Cammi and Davina, and I approve of that. They’re both currently pawn (...Davina is a powerful pawn) in the men’s games but I hope they’ll become their own agents sooner rather than later, they definitely have enough material to work with to make them agents.
That said, watching Davina get schooled by Klaus in just how unprepared she was for this war was quite great to watch. She doesn’t understand the Originals or the games they’re able to play, and whichever side of the war she’s going to fight for she’s going to need to understand that.
I can’t quite decide what to make of Rebekah/Marcel. During most of their scene it felt like she was trying to prove she had the power over him, but at the end it did seem a little like she wanted him to agree to it for emotional reasons rather than power play ones. And while I’m not exactly against this ship, I’m not in the mood to watch Rebekah get hurt by it...at this point, if they actually did something with it to earn it coming around to hurt her maybe, but not generalized moodiness about it.
I want to know what’s up with Hayley, but I do not approve of the “Klaus’s blood healed you” explanation. I can take magical mystery baby forces to a point, but seriously, how can the baby possibly have Klaus’s *vampire* blood?
So I’m guessing next week will involve a lot of Originals vs. witches conflict in response to what happened this time. One fringe thing I’ll give this show over TVD (along with a lot of bigger things) is that their time scale is less ridiculous...or at least can be. It’s not a languid pace, but there does feel like people take time between big events to process what’s going on.
Okay...so now that I’ve talked about the rest of the stuff, let’s get down to Elijah.
Oh Elijah, I had a feeling he’d be back this episode, but for a limited appearance this was pretty much awesome. Only Elijah would lie in wait for hours or days waiting for the right moment to officially wake up. He’s so the smart one; even with Klaus doing better than he used to, Elijah is careful and methodical.
I don’t know if I so much expected or just couldn’t help but hope, that Elijah would stroll in during Klaus and Davina’s confrontation and force them to behave themselves. Someone has to be the adult here, and Davina is actually a teenager and Klaus is a whiney petulant manpire child.
I want to see what happens between Elijah and Davina next episode, now that Elijah’s out of the coffin and making deals again (‘It’s okay Davina, I have a thing for supernatural teenage brunettes.’) and how quickly Klaus hates having Elijah back in the game; since all the reasons he had for daggering Elijah in the first place still apply. Next could be incredibly awesome too see Elijah back in true action again.
However, while I’m glad we got some actual brother-sister time with Elijah and Rebekah, I continue to get more frustrated with Elijah’s attitude towards Klaus. I want the Elijah of TVD 3x13 back in some amount; the Elijah that was *done* dealing with Klaus’s nonsense and had it in him to walk away. I get that he wants to protect Hayley, even that he thinks this will help Klaus in the long term but I’m ready for Elijah to set some ground rules for Klaus’s behavior from here on out. I don’t need him ready to walk away from the family I guess, even after the daggering...well it just made him fall in love with Elena so I should probably give some wiggle room on how he feels about Klaus doing it, but I need to know that he’s just not going to blindly support Klaus either. I need Elijah to be his own character, and although this return was nice it hasn’t quite proven that part yet.
Anyway, I continue to like this show a lot, and hope it doesn’t let me down. It took TVD a few years to really lose its way, so I hope we get a lot of good from this show before it does too. I am way more invested than I am in TVD right now that’s for sure.

Date: 2013-10-23 04:13 am (UTC)Same here. For once, I would like to see Rebekah have some power in a relationship.
I need to know that he’s just not going to blindly support Klaus either.
I don't think he will, after this. Haley and the child are his priority right now, and Elijah will work with Klaus as long as they're both trying to protect mama wolf; but Elijah won't trust Klaus to put anyone else's interests above his own.

Date: 2013-10-23 06:43 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm not in favour of it for this reason. She doesn't have any emotional power over him imo.

lolz

Yep, I know how you feel. Especially after Klaus just daggered him yet again... I wonder how he'll react to Klaus about that.

Date: 2013-10-23 08:12 pm (UTC)And the when and why Klaus pulled out the dagger this time. While it makes total sense for Klaus, I think Elijah should be more than a touch miffed at being rejected like that. Both times we've seen Klaus dagger Elijah it's been in moments when Elijah was trusting him and willing to let bygones be bygones between them. Last time he came back ready to split the family up for good so I want some real consequence for Klaus doing it this time when it was even more of a betrayal.
