Okay, so I’ve been engaging in fandom activities, just not posting about it. Basically, I’ve been inhaling Downton Abbey.

I liked each of the seasons very differently from each other. Season 1 was mostly ridiculous, but I thought that was the point and relatively well told farce; season 2 was a lot more serious and had a lot more growth but sort of at the expense of good pacing with plot and characterization issues related to that; I think s3 was the best from a structural standpoint (wow and I glad it only covered a year or so rather than 3-6) but it felt a little less pointed.

Anyway, right now this show is sort of a brief interlude of brain-eating but I don’t think is really going to stick with me. It’ll need at least another watch to even have a chance but I’, not feeling the need to do another watch right away. It’s really well done on a lot of levels, but in a lot of other ways I feel like it’s missing something. Ina mad race through it I’m not sure exactly what that something is yet, but I feel it.

I’m not actually sure I have a lot to say about it at the moment, I’m going to go add it to my list of shows I might review (assuming I get back to doing that project, and I will...at some point). But there is one thought that came though pretty clearly.

Wow are Mary and Matthew about a hundred times less annoying now that they’re not dragging everyone into their melodrama. Sure the pining was some epic level pining in season 2 (and I do love me some pining), but it was pretty bothersome considering the tie scale of the show (this has like the opposite problem of TVD’s pacing, although again that’s better in s3); and then in s3 their one big fight before the wedding basically everyone told them to get over themselves and grow the hell up which I’ve been saying for a while. I can’t tell yet if I’m glad they’re together because I ship it or I’m just glad they stopped being idiots about each other.

Speaking of TVD, this was a very nice diversion from how full of rage I am about that show. How can a show in the nineteen-teens have better represented proactive female characters and less douchey romantic leads (while still definitely douchey in their ways) than a modern CW show? But if I stay on this topic I’m just going to get all riled up and angry about that again so I think I’ll leave it there.

In fact, contrary to my earlier statement, maybe I should just continue this brain-eating diversion for now, I’m definitely happier than if I tried to think about certain other shows right now.

To make up for only briefly reviewing this, how about we add a meme to the end of this?

Name a fandom and I'll tell you three pairings I love, two pairings I consider shipping, and one pairing I hate.
