So I’ve been feeling a little down on getting any fic writing done, so I figured some TVD rewatching was in order. And since it fits nicely with my review project and I’ve been ignoring that project too, I figured I might as well review some TVD and kill two birds with one stone.
TVD 2x07: Masquerade
As you might guess I set out to watch some Elijah episodes which start in ‘Rose’ but decided I wanted to watch ‘Masquerade’ first because it’s a pretty awesome episode too.
I still really like this one, I may not get as caught up in the plot as I did the first time, but there’s so much going on that it’s really hard not to enjoy it. There are things I don’t *like* about it, but the episode as a whole is really good.
The main thing I don’t like might be obvious to y’all at this point. But leaving Elena out of the plan it such a dick (um...jerk) move on the part of everyone else in her life that I always get mad at them for it. At least Elena takes matters into her own hands once she realized something’s going on, and I don’t feel like the show was telling us they were doing the right thing in this case, but the fact that EVERYONE else (that’s in the know) is in on the plan and don’t tell her MAKES ME ANGRY. Seriously, all of you need to stop (note, they still have yet to listen to me). And it might bug me less if Alaric’s part of the plan wasn’t “keep Elena out of it” but no, they needed to make sure Elena stayed out of things.
However, the episode itself does a pretty good job of getting everyone involved in one plot thread or another, and I love those type of stories. AND it was largely plot based as opposed to ship based like dance episodes often get. I mean, half of my main ship hasn’t even shown up yet so I have no use for shipping drama at this point in the series, although my original ship pick being Elena/Matt had some cute bits. But for the record I had few problems (besides the one I just spent a paragraph on) with this era of the Triangle, I never shipped it and I still don’t but it doesn’t grate on me like it does by up to date in the show.
This is really the last episode of the Katherine as Big Bad arc that seemed like it was going to be a bigger deal than it turned out to be. It really just a set up for the Originals to enter the picture, which is kind of a waste of Katherine’s Big Bad potential but at the same time we’ve now seen how it can hamstring the show to have to keep a bad guy around without really changing their position in the story. Kat didn’t just go away, but her motivations were such that they could move her into a different roll and keep her around, as opposed to the Klaus problem we faced this year.
Plus, I love the Originals so I really can’t complain that Kat’s bad guy arc was kept short so we could get to them. It would be hypocritical of me. I do love Kat, but I love Elijah more, so come on Elijah.
Next time:
Either TVD ‘Rose’ or DW: ‘The Unquiet Dead’
