Okay, let's get this ball rolling with a little piece of epic comedy known as:
Community 1x23: Modern Warfare
I may have to reconsider doing Community reviews because I can see having a problem thinking of things to say. But I will at least do the first few that were requested.
But here’s a few things that I can say:
-As a person who loves books, both this and the season 2 paintball eps bug me because HOW DARE YOU SHOOT/SPRAY PAINT ONTO ALL THOSE BOOKS?!?!?! This is wrong, and should not be done, the library should not be battleground in a paintball war.
-I do think I enjoy this episode more when I don’t think about the ways it’s referencing other things. Aside from the Terminator joke, I prefer it as just a general send up of a lot of different styles of action movies rather than trying to frame it in terms of what it’s playing with.
-The scene in the cafeteria is the best one of the episode. Bad-ass Shirley is good for a lot, but everything about the way it’s written and performed and filmed is all just about perfect there.
-This one seems to go by REALLY FAST. There’s really no space for anything to sink in because the scenes go by so fast. This was helped some by making it a two-parter in season 2, but these epic kind of eps are just going to be that way.
-The main problem with the above point is that some of the characters get very little screen time. I think Annie gets the worst of it, at least Pierce and Troy got a couple good moments before they were taken out, Annie was pretty much barely in it (which the second paintball story will make clear is ridiculous). Also there wasn’t much from the supporting cast, but that’s really mostly only noticeable in hindsight.
-I almost feel like watching this to review was a mistake. It’s really better enjoyed when not thinking too much, like a lot of action stories. Not that it’s mindless, just that I engage a more critical part of my brain when I review things which means my ability to just enjoy the humor and action and fun gets taken down a bit.
-I’d be lying if I said the Jeff/Britta stuff didn’t bug me. I’ve just never found their relationship all that interesting. I do choose to focus on the parts of this episode that validate that perspective usually, but the fact that they get so much of the screen time of the ep kind of undercuts that.
-All told this was a very good episode, but I’m definitely in the camp that prefers to have a balance between character piece and set piece episodes instead of wanting all episodes to be this kind of epic. (Dang I was trying to go out on a high note and somehow it turned sour)
NEXT UP:
Doctor Who, ‘Rose’
(Keep on requesting episodes you’d like me to review)
