So I took yesterday off from DW s5, but now we can continue. With an episode that insists on reusing episode abbreviations.

I give this ep a solid B+. I can’t give it an A because the new Daleks are laughable and the story just wasn’t crafted all that great. However...Oh baby-Eleven, you’ve found your inner RTD-Doctor and gone apeshit on some Daleks, I am now able to like you better.

I don’t know if the credit goes to MS, Mark Gaitiss, or the director for making Eleven totally seem like my Doctor again; the broken, damaged, and hurting one I love, when around the Daleks. Hell I can almost get echoes of Rose-angst which makes me feel better too. Say what you will about the Daleks being overexposed, in this case I’m glad for it (well, except for how stupid the new ones look).

Watching the Doctor beat the crap out of the Dalek was love. All his Rose, Donna, Gallifrey, you fuckers made me create a clone of myself who ran off with my girlfriend issues; yep I see it, the heart(s) that I feel for. Especially when you consider that less than a day ago he was fighting Time Lords and then on a whirlwind companion tour and all the issues connected with the Daleks that had to bring up he’s entitled to shit a brick over them showing up again and then escaping.

Do have to give the nod to Gaitiss on the whole how to prove you’re human is to hurt thing, and it was well acted to boot. But that’s my broken little Doctor, going for the pain and loss as the thing that defines you. And Amy, oh Amy, it *is* love that makes you human, it’s what the Doctor used to be before he lost her.

That said, I wasn’t real fond of Amy in this ep, though most of my issues are with story craft regarding her. First off she was largely sidelined, but it was clear they were...pretending to try and give her a bonding plot with the army lady except that got lost too. And for anyone who says Amy has Rose’s compassion, you’re full of shit; Amy was curious about army lady’s plight but not compassionate to it (some of it might have been KG’s acting, but it was likely the writing, I’m equal opportunity that way as far as writer credit/blame). This isn’t to say it couldn’t be an interesting character concept, just don’t try to pretend she’s got that level of compassion when she doesn’t. Amy’s big bit about love at the end would have been better if it had come from somewhere, either how own life or maybe connecting with army lady’s hopes and fears, instead it just happens. And while it’s important that someone can give that talk since the Doctor and love aren’t on the same page, it should have been better done.

Probably my biggest eye rolling bit (well second after the stupid new Dalek look) came from how flipping long it took the Daleks to realize the Doctor was threatening them with a cookie/biscuit. These are supposed to be such grand war machines and can’t tell a detonator from a cookie for AGES especially when the older ones had been serving for tea for a while.

I did like android man, I thought that was well realized, and probably when I think about it more I can find some Doctor parallels Gaitiss sneaked in there. Churchill I wasn’t fond of though, which was too bad.

In any case I REALLY liked Eleven in this one and that’s what I choose to focus on (except...oh forget it, you know), which is why this one gets bumped to the highest grade so far.

Plus, you should all be proud of me for making it to the Dalek episode without making lots of Rose references.

Next up...River. Some of you have said she gets a lot better this season so I hope you’re right, but I’m also filled with dread and flashbacks to the episodes that will not be named.
