Title: Untitled
Author: jedi_of_urth
Characters/pairing: Ten (I & II), Rose, companion party, Doctor/Rose
Rating: PG ish
Disclaimer: Nope, still not mine
Spoilers: Journey's End (really? yep)
Summary: Set after they get the Earth towed home and before they start dropping companions off during the big group hugging scene, a couple moments I pretty much assume happened.

Why I never posted it: I'm not sure, I think I even asked someone to beta it for me at one point, but I never finished it off or posted it. I mainly wrote it to try and work out some of my issues with JE; it only worked a little.

The Doctor grinned widely as he watched his friends fly the TARDIS, smooth as you please, as they towed the Earth home. It wouldn’t last, couldn’t, he knew that, but just at this moment he didn’t think about, just let himself enjoy the ride.

And then they were there, the planet fitted back into its proper position in the heavens circling an average yellow sun and cheers echoed in the consol room. He scooped Donna, who was next to him, into a tight hug, but she wiggled away after a moment and went off to chase Jack around. The Doctor laughed at that, Jack ought to enjoy that.

He gave Mickey a handshake and quick hug and Mickey said, “How’s that for the tin dog?”

The Doctor sensed the young man had just been waiting to use that one but couldn’t pass up saying, “Good boy,” while giving Mickey a pat on the cheek. He laughed as he did it, and so did Mickey who moved on to grab Jackie in a fierce hug.

Looking across the room he saw his double was just letting Rose out of his hug and the Doctor swooped in before anyone else could catch the blond. It was the first chance he’d had to properly hug her, and it felt wonderful to hold her again. He clung to her desperately but he wasn’t about to let her go. He could feel her smile as she nestled her face against his shoulder. Just like old times, sure he had one less heart and was missing a few senses but he could appreciate this just fine as he was.

But then he felt her fade a little; without even moving he knew the moment the situation got too weird for her. He didn’t want to let her go, not even a little bit, but he made himself loosen his embrace slightly.

She sighed, but made no move to move away and his heart raced. “Still me,” he told her softly.

She pulled back just enough to look at him clearly, he noticed her smile that had been so wide and happy moments before now looked more forced. But then she said, “I know,” and his smile at least returned to full force. “Just going to take some getting used to,” she promised. She nodded and bit her lip slightly, but then she looked more hopeful. Then she rose up slightly and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Promise, it’ll be okay.”

Then she was gone, hopping across the room to hug Sarah Jane and chat randomly about what they had just accomplished. “So that’s Rose,” Martha said catching his attention. “I can’t believe you found her again.”

But the Doctor’s gaze was on the other Doctor, the still Time Lord Doctor. They were both still smiling but he could feel the Time Lord’s hurt having seen the part human Doctor’s interaction with Rose. Resigned was actually the other’s state of mind, even partly human the Doctor retained enough empathy with those of his own kind, especially when it was essentially himself, to read the other’s emotions.

Also, as they had been the same person until only hours ago, and still mostly were, he knew what the other was thinking. He’d felt the same fall of hope as Rose had said she needed time to accept him. Time was short and this wouldn’t last, that much was obvious.

But then he turned to hug Martha, hoping she hadn’t noticed his moment of lost hope. “You’re all amazing,” he assured her.

“Yeah, but that’s not what I’m talking about.” She was still smiling as she said it, and he could feel holding her that she was being honest this time. He relaxed, it was good to know that had turned out alright at least. “Just don’t lose her again.”

“Got it,” he said nodding and letting her go, keeping a fake smile on his face. For a moment he thought he saw her about to question him, but she didn’t and went off to give Jack a break from Donna’s consistent hugs.

The brown suited Doctor had moved back to the consol and announced that he was going to land in Ealing. Rose moved up to stand by that Doctor and he looked down at her with a look the watching Doctor had never seen on his face from the outside. He’d never let her go, so the human Doctor had to wonder how his one heart possibly could.
