For the fic/vid commentary meme
lycannoir requested commentary on my vid "Always Goodbye"

A couple commentary notes. Commentary of a vid means less guide for how to set it up so I made this up on my own (and if I do more, no promises it will be quite the same). The format here is:

I hope it works out.

So, a little background on this vid, it was made…less than a month after Doomsday aired when it was still *very* fresh in my mind. I made a lot of vids and started a lot of fic during that time because it was such a wound I needed to spill it out. But I also wanted to do something different with it sometimes.
I came across this song by accident (as with a lot of my vided songs) and really liked it for a while before I vided it. I pretty much always knew I wanted to vid it, but at the time I didn’t have the clips to make vids for much and it wasn’t a good Doctor Who fit. Until after Doomsday, at which point I really wanted to vid it and was sure it must work, but couldn’t get it to fit in my head. I had it in mind as a Doctor POV song, having been the one with the epic goodbye story that happened, but it didn’t fit. And then somehow the idea of Mickey crossed my mind and suddenly it DID fit. Mickey and Rose were the ones always saying goodbye, Mickey was the one always on the outside looking in on something he had lost/could never have.
And so…
Always Goodbye
I never actually managed to put the title in the vid, that was probably a mistake on my part because I do like the title.
[0:00-0:11]
I wanted just some general clips of Mickey and Rose interacting, beginning and ending sort of.
Also I might as well say here, this was before I realized one could easily change the output aspect ration in WMM, yeah it took me a while.
[0:11-0:15] I'm on the outside, looking in
This was a pretty obvious clip choice to start the main song with, showing Mickey always on the outside, looking in on the Doctor and Rose’s relationship.
[0:15-0:21]What do I see?
So much of this left to begin
I’m not happy with the editing here, I think it either needs longer fades or no fades, the fast fades don’t work for me. But the point was clips showing Mickey’s decision to start a new life of his own.
[0:21]Where would I be?
I don’t know why I used this exactly, probably the idea was Mickey remembering back at the beginning when he was literally clinging to Rose to keep from losing her.
[0:22-0:27]I'm on the outside, looking in
Again Mickey being the odd man out with Team TARDIS, with added Jack
[0:27-0:40]Cover me through this night
Guess I don't know what's, left to say
But hear me out
Again I’m not crazy about the look of this, the first clip goes on too long, it too quickly jumps to the second and the third passes too quickly. But it does cover several of their big goodbyes.
[0:40-0:45]All of the dreams of, yesterday
Keep breaking me down
If I made this today I’m sure I’d play around with the look of the “flashback” more to make it clear that’s what it was (although it is pretty much is anyway). Then I’m not crazy about the second clip.
[0:45-0:49]What's on the outside, can you say
This I like, since it’s pretty accurately reflected by what’s going on in the clip.
[0:50-0:57]Or am I getting carried away
This is sort of Mickey/Jake but doesn’t have to be seen that way.
[0:57-1:09]It's in your mind
It's in your eyes
So it's goodbye again
Rose running off in the TARDIS, twice. And yes I know the ‘in your eyes’ bit is completely obvious, I also don’t care.
[1:09-1:14]It's way past time
For one last try
For some reason I though I had leaned towards season 2 stuff for the ‘way past time’ bits, because by then it was, but it turns out I jumped around with it because it *always* was too late for them. Anyway, by the time he asked to come along on the TARDIS it wasn’t about Rose anymore, it was about him.
[1:15-1:20]So it's goodbye again
Mickey’s anger over that fact in Boomtown
[1:21-1:29]Goodbye... again
And his resignation to it in TCI.
[1:29-1:34]
Even early on, they were already moving away from each other.
[1:34-1:40]I'm getting on, what's the use
You know how I get
I’m not sure what this is supposed to be, but I think it works.
[1:40-1:45]I can't decide which is the truth
At least not yet
This was supposed to be Mickey looking at Rose and then Jake not sure which was more important to him, and a reminder than he cares about the Doctor too, but I’m not 100% that came out right.
[1:45-1:57]I got the feeling, it's you
What can be said, alone in this room
No...
The café scene in PotW is one that I choreograph a lot. Rose movements throughout the scene are something that I work to keep in time with the music.
[1:57-2:03]It's in your mind
It's in your eyes
Again it isn’t really focused on the Rose/Doctor aspect so much as Mickey losing Rose to the TARDIS life, that she’s never going to come home to him or be the same even if she does.
[2:04-2:11]So it's goodbye again
It's way past time
Okay maybe I did use season 1 here, to show that by the time she got back after being missing for a year, even just a few days her time, it was already too late to go back.
[2:11-2:20]For one last try
So it's goodbye again
This is the big one really, when he says behind and watches her walk away, presumably forever. She turns and walks into the TARDIS, her life, and he stays in Pete;s World where he’s found a new life of his own.
[2:20-2:32]Who wants you now?
Maybe somebody else
This is where it becomes about Rose’s relationship with the Doctor as opposed to her just leaving Mickey behind. Who wants her now? Well the Doctor that’s who, and all Mickey could do was look on as they fell in love.
[2:32-2:42]I'll wait around
Maybe you'll forget you were ever here
The first is pretty much exactly what’s going on in the scene, the second is kind of an early realization on Mickey’s part that she could just forget and leave.
[2:42-2:54]Maybe forget you were ever, never here
And then we jump forward to the similar line meaning something completely different. Now the question is can Rose forget what she’s lost and has just landed in a new universe; can she even belong there now?
[2:54-2:59]
Damn it I was going to work Father’s Day in there somehow if it killed me.
[3:02-3:07]I'm on the outside, looking down
What do I see?
Season 1 times when Mickey got a good view of Rose at the Doctor’s side, choosing him over Mickey.
[3:08-3:18]So much of this cold, in the ground
Where would I be?
On the outside, looking down
The last is better understood knowing the scene, because it doesn’t exactly look like Mickey’s on the outside there, but since he’s in the process of hearing about Rose’s TARDIS life that he isn’t part of it works perfectly.
[3:19-3:26]Cover me before you go
This in one of those places where I’m kind of hyper critical of my own stuff, because like earlier I start to wonder if the POV sticks right, where really one can probably easily just get that the whole thing is Mickey’s POV and not really think any of it drifts into Rose’s. It doesn’t but sometimes I think the clips are fighting it, but that’s probably just me.
[3:26-3:32]It's in your mind
It's in your eyes
Rose seems determined not to stay where Mickey is, it’s completely obvious to everyone at this point.
[3:32-3:44]So it's goodbye again
It's way past time
For one last try
At this point Mickey so knows it’s over that he’s fist bumping the Doctor.
[3:44-3:48]So it's goodbye again
Considering this song could be considered Mickey’s feeling in Boomtown there’s really not a ton of it in here, but this one it needed, when they both walked away in the end.
[3:49-3:55]Your falling out,
I'm falling in
And that’s where things stand in Doomsday, Rose is falling out of her life, while Mickey is falling into his own, and they’re never going to be a couple again for so many reasons.
[3:55-4:07]So it's goodbye again
It's way past time
For one last try
Again, it’s been too late for them all along. But I think for the last I had in mind the shooting idea for TCI that maybe Rose and Mickey would give it one more try, but it never worked.
[4:07]
At this point the vid takes a turn into multiple interpretations land. It works as a continued look back at all the times Mickey has lost Rose, emotionally or physically. But in my mind it was always an AU story where the Bad Wolf Bay story was the Doctor found a way through and he and Rose left, meaning Mickey lost her for good one more time. I’ve never been real sure which one people picked up on.
[4:07-4:12]So it's goodbye... again
Rose hears the Doctor calling to her and tells her family that has to find him. This is pretty much the same both ways, either way it’s a reminder that although it’s Mickey POV, this is a Doctor/Rose vid in a lot of ways.
[4:12-4:22]It's in your mind
It's in your eyes
So it's goodbye again
In my story, it’s about Rose and the Doctor seeing each other again and Mickey looks on, knowing he’ll lose her again
[4:22-4:38]It's way past time
For one last try
So it's goodbye again
The story gets a little out of order here, but it’s about how in the end, he has to let her go, and say goodbye, again, as Rose makes her way back to the Doctor and the TARDIS where she belongs.
I think it works without that, but I’m not sure I have anything to say to imply meaning of those clips in a general watching way, I’m telling you how they work in my head.
[4:38-4:43]
The credits on this are truly nothing special, credits very seldom are. These ones I think I was more focused on them being short since the music died out so rapidly.
