Author's Notes/Warnings (fic): LAS fic, post series fic, so general spoilers through the end, shamelessly fluffy
Author’s Notes (flashback): Originally posted April 2011, I don’t think this one went over very well as I recall, and I can kind of understand why. It’s not bad, but it’s not going to work for everyone.
Betty had had keys to Daniel’s various apartments back in New York, and she had one to his London flat too, but she still wasn’t sure if Daniel had given it to her as a ‘Betty always has keys to my apartment’ thing or an ‘I want my girlfriend to be able to come over whenever she wants’ thing. He said it was the second but it hadn’t been given any more formality than the first.
So she still knocked when she came over and waited for him to shout, “Is that you Betty?”
“Yes,” she called back.
“Just let yourself in,” he replied.
Usually he came and answered the door instead, but when he was in the middle of something he would just tell her to let herself in, and she did. Unusually, Daniel wasn’t in the main room when Betty entered.
Daniel’s place was small, smaller than Betty’s actually, which was why they usually spent time there. Daniel would never have lived in a place this small back in New York, but he was sticking to his resolve to make a new start on his own and his living conditions reflected that. The kitchen, small dining area, and living room were all one medium sized area with only the bedroom and bathroom separated, and both of those doors were closed.
She called out for Daniel again and he called out from the bedroom but when she went to try the door it was locked. “I’ve got a surprise for you,” he added before she’d even asked what was going on. “Go sit on the sofa and close your eyes.”
“Daniel...” she said cautiously.
“Come on, you’ll like it.”
Betty’s heart had leaped up into her throat. She couldn’t help thinking that Daniel could be considering another giant leap in their relationship when she was still getting used to the idea that her best friend and former boss was now her boyfriend.
“Are your eyes closed?” he called.
Betty made herself relax as she sat down and closed her eyes. Maybe it was something more reasonable than the conclusion she had jumped to. “Okay,” she told him as her hands still fidgeted nervously.
She heard his footsteps approach as he came into the main room, but he didn’t come all the way over to where she sat. “Alright, open them.”
It was certainly a surprise and not the type she’d been half dreading. Daniel stood before her dressed in a full costume of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast.
“It’s for your Halloween party,” he explained. “And I got you the Belle costume so we could go as a pair.”
Betty felt giddy. She’d been happy when Daniel said he’d dress up with her for the party, and surprised when he’d said he’d get them their costumes. He didn’t usually dress up for Halloween, so she knew he was doing it entirely for her. And even if she had her suspicions that he’d called Papi of Hilda to be reminded what her favorite movie was she loved that he was doing all this.
“I love you,” she said as she continued laughing, then abruptly stopped. Had she really said that? She hadn’t said that to him before, not like this. “It. I love it,” she covered.
But Daniel quickly removed his head piece and smiled at her though he was obviously surprised. He didn’t push her, but neither did he make it easier for her to take back her slip of the tongue, looking so hopeful and loving. His feelings had been pretty clear ever since he’d shown up in London, having moved across the ocean essentially just to be with her. But since then he’d been waiting for her to decide if she thought they were friends or something more. And she didn’t want to say those words to him until she was sure how she meant them.
And now he was waiting on her some more, to decide if she wanted to take it back. “You,” she finally said shyly. “I love you.”
And she didn’t mean it as a friend.
