D.I. Drake only “borrowed” the Quattro when she and the Guv were fighting. Of course, if they weren’t already they were bound to be once she took his car out. It was possible he at least knew who had taken it and had angrily thrown the keys at Alex with a vicious warning about not hurting the car, but it was just as likely Alex had taken the keys without him knowing it, again, and he’d be on a tirade when they returned. Either way Shaz would have been just as happy not to be put in the middle to the situation.

But here she was, in the passenger seat of a possibly stolen vehicle for no clear reason. D.I. Drake hadn’t said anything about a case she was working on, she was just asking questions about Shaz’s upcoming wedding. And while it was nice to have a female friend to talk about that with, Shaz wished it wasn’t happening as they raced through the streets on London.

Finally, Shaz couldn’t take the confusion any more. “Begging your pardon ma’am, but what’s all this about?”

Alex didn’t answer for a long moment, instead focusing on the road until she pulled to a slow stop along the street. “Well, it’s just I never know if I’m going to be around for the wedding or not,” she said in that cryptic way she had, “so I thought we’d celebrate early”

“Oh,” was all Shaz said as the D.I. reached into the backseat and pulled out a bottle of wine or maybe it was champagne, and two glasses. “Shouldn’t Chris be along for that?”

“Not tonight. Now come on, I’m sure Gene would rather we did our toasting outside the car.”

“Wouldn’t he rather we hadn’t even taken his car?” Shaz asked as they got outside.

Alex shrugged. “I’ll get it back to him in one piece.”

“What are you two fighting about now?” Shaz had to ask.

“You know, I’m not even sure anymore,” Alex laughed and popped the cork on the bottle and pored them each a glass of white wine. It was true that the Guv and the D.I had been on a hair’s trigger over the Operation Rose business, but Shaz got the distinct feeling Alex just wasn’t in the mood to talk about it.

She was in the mood to let Shaz do the talking it turned out. Around the guys, and especially in CID, Alex always had to be assertive in conversations, but tonight she was content with occasionally prompting Shaz’s ramble. And it was nice to be able to talk about her frustrations with the planning of the wedding especially how Chris seemed unable to handle any of the responsibilities. But she loved him so much, and Alex listened to her gush about that too. It wasn’t the type of night Shaz had ever spent, or expected to spend, with her mentor but the wine was good and so was the company.

Eventually the wine ran out and Alex suggested they might return Gene’s car on the way to Luigi’s. Of course that would meant the guys would be there and the quiet moment between the two women would be lost, so Shaz pointed to a bar down the street and suggested that the Guv could wait this once.

A couple hours later when they did finally return to the station it played out exactly as Shaz would have predicted. The Guv was on them almost before they’d gotten out of the car, although all his yelling was directed at his errant D.I. rather than the WPC. Which Shaz would have been grateful for if she hadn’t contributed so much to the situation.

“Bolly, what in the blazes do you think you’re doing with MY CAR?” the Guv roared as Alex stood firm before him, seemingly only slightly amused at his behavior.

Alex shrugged, as if the answer was the most obvious thing in the world. “Girls’ night.”
