I think The Cage is a lot more interesting later when it is presented in context of TOS as we knew it a few episodes later in the two-part The Menagerie. It's pretty rough to watch on its on. I imagine it's more interesting to watch in retrospect rather than first, though I admit I've not known it any other way so it's hard for me to say for sure. The story itself I find interesting, but it's not particularly well done and you can tell that Star Trek hasn't really "found itself" yet.
