Day 7: A pairing that disappointed you
Given my answer to day 6 about how I’m a pretty compulsive shipper, I’ve definitely been disappointed by several ships over the years. In a variety of ways, too.
--Harry/Hermione: given JKR’s recent comments, I guess she might agree with this one. I’m not even one of those people who had long assumed the hero would end up with his girl supporting character, I didn’t ship anything in this series until OOTP when it broadsided me that I was pretty sure Hermione was in love with Harry and he was on the verge of loving her back. Yes what had happened in the series up until that point was part of why it made so much sense that they would go that direction, but I didn’t ship it, or even see it, until it clicked into place. And then...the last couple books happened.
-Most any ship on BSG. Of course the show itself let me down so much that I’m not sure it’s right to point out that there were shipping problems in addition to everything else, but there really were. Adama/Roslin mostly let me down by making the characters that got together an annoying shadow of their earlier versions that had convinced me to ship them. Same could be said for Baltar/Six and Tigh/Ellen. Lee/Kara got weird, got no resolution, and had turned the characters (especially Kara) into something barely recognizable as the ship I’d tended to root for. Even Kara/Sam just became something that made no sense. I just never cared for Helo/Sharon so I kind of hate that they’re the only ones the show seemed to care about getting a “happy” ending.
-Doctor/Rose: oh this one’s going to bring up some old issues. I still hate JE and the resolution of the Doctor/Rose love story and the only consolation remains that Moffat shouldn’t be able to get his hands on it and make it worse (the rest of the DW verse though...). I think the end is a complete betrayal of the story we’d seen at least since Doomsday and largely before. The Doctor was supposed to *learn something* from having lost her once, that it was better to embrace life and love while it was there instead of running from it because it would hurt in the future. And after Rose fought her way across dimensions, against impossible odds, the Doctor gets to make that kind of choice for her when she clearly wanted him. And it’s not like there’s no value in that resolution as an idea, it could probably have worked but the writing of JE is the biggest disappointment of all.
-I almost think I should count Jeff/Annie, but it’s still going on so I can’t be sure how disappointed I’ll be in the end. There have been quite a few pieces along the way that have disappointed me. Because clearly it’s enough of a thing that writers get to pick at it but not prepared to actually go anywhere with it so picking at it tends to end badly so far. I’m still kind of hopeful, but we’ll see.
