I never had a problem seeing CoE happening in the larger DW verse. DW the main show would never have touched it but that was kind of the point that was what happened without the Doctor stepping in save the day; the day was still saved but at great cost and a view on even worse paths it could have taken. It was a Doctor Who story, where the Doctor never showed up; but MD just gets to big to exist in the same universe. And I have a little bit of suspicion that RTD might have subconsciously been of the opinion that the Doctor was out of his control so he didn't exist in his world anymore.
Ridiculous is a good word for it though. If it hadn't gotten quite so overblown it could have been pretty fantastic, but it kind of drowned in it's own ridiculousness after a while.
