I wasn't exactly sad to see John and Anne go per se, because I was always looking forward to the Doctor/Rose reunion, but the fact that I had liked them so much made me write it as more of a tragedy that I think I'd originally intended, gave it a little more sacrifice of the innocence than I would have done if I'd just been writing them to set the stage for the reunion. And in doing so it was more in line with the original story anyway so it was for the good.
