TVD: 3x19: Heart of Darkness
So for the first third or so of the episode I was working up the energy to get good and mad at it again, but then, right around the “sexy” scene I started to just laugh at it. It’s SO over-done and forced and just silly that I started to just find every bit of it funny. Then we got to Rose’s monolog and I was back to being PISSED OFF, but managed to laugh off Stefan’s completely nonsensical BS and Tyler’s dickishness.
Gods this episode is awful, and unlike last ep when I actually did like more of it than I spent time writing about this one is just pure awfulness. Except for Kol, Kol is awesome in his dickishness in ways the other characters can never pull off (Klaus used to be able to, but not so much any more since they defanged him so much). Actually I suppose I could say most of the parts with the Originals don’t suck, even if it is a seriously defanged Klaus here. I’d like to say Rose goes in the non-awful pile because I love Rose, but I do not love Rose here, sorry Rose.
In fact this is going to be a very short review (I think) because I really don’t have much to say outside of the fact that this episode is bad to the point of absurdity, and if you can get to the point of so bad it’s good the sting of how much it sucks goes down a lot. (And then you remember you’re supposed to take it seriously and you get angry again.)
-Yep, Stefan continues to make no sense. All of his lines either directly make no sense or end up contradicting each other. And the show continues to focus on the road to “recovery” rather than the road to “redemption,” or treats them like they’re the same thing. Hint, they’re really not writers, stop it (I know it’s too late now); also write better in general.
-Damon’s all “What if there’s no bump” and then proceeds to throw up a wall between him and Elena. It was awful (or funny depending on my level of just roll with it) in general because there are always going to be bumps in life or a relationship, if you’re trying to win her over say you won’t fly off the handle at bumps and/or will try and minimize them, don’t be stupid enough to think there won’t be any, that’s for fanfic writers. It just gets worse (or sillier) when you look at it in context of this BEING a bump.
-I’ve pretty much gotten to the point where the best explanation I can give for things here is that Elena is horny as hell since she hasn’t been having sex in months now. And she’s got all these hot guys who hang around in love with her (by which I include Matt and Elijah and maybe Alaric since sometimes it’s hard not to think they’re aware how they’re vibing) but she’s not getting any. And reading it that way both makes a modicum of sense and makes it pretty funny to me.
-SHUT UP ROSE. (Sorry, anger got in the way of my amusement for a minute.)
-SHUT UP TYLER. (Oh great, now I can’t turn it off.) Yeah it might be kind of weird that Caroline kept the picture Klaus drew, but how much of a dickwad do you have to be to think it was any kind of threat to your relationship? Be angry at Klaus for trying to take even more from you (you have a better case than Stefan on that front), but walking out on Caroline is just dumb (therefore funny for my state of mind since today I find the characters being dumb funny, better to laugh than scream).
-Is Rose still talking nonsense? SHUT UP ROSE.
-Stefan is still saying things that make no sense. I would tell him to shut up but as much of a dick and idiot as he’s being it’s so ridiculous that it only makes me laugh.
-Rose’s speech is pretty much THE WORST THING EVER. (Okay, we all know my feelings on the worst thing this show does, but Rose’s speech is up there.)
-I will allow the episode a bit of leniency on one thing, but it’s still pretty ridiculous. I’ll assume Rebekah doesn’t know Matt KILLED HER BROTHER in the last episode. But yeah the fact that they're having these conversations with that JUST HAPPENING makes their scenes super funny to me. Yeah they have decent chemistry, but that ought to be the elephant in the room (or truck), but no, completely not even an issue apparently.
- At some point along the way Klaus’s big epic bromance with (more accurately for or at) Stefan became the *only* explanation for Klaus’s behavior and the last couple episodes have really hammered that point home. Oh Klaus, you ridiculous one time evil mastermind you. Why can Elijah have all the squishy feelings and still come off as competent and threatening when he wants to, but you just get defanged by your squishy type feelings?
-I still really want to see some fic where Elijah is the one at the house when the road trip crew shows up. As delightful as Kol is damn it I want Elijah to get SOME revenge for Finn.
-Mary lived in Kansas. Have the writers ever been to my part of the woods (Colorado with lots of Kansas relatives)? Because even the Kansas/Colorado border is about three hours from Denver and there’s basically nothing along the border (and I got the impression they had driven into the mountains to get away from Kol rather than east, therefore adding more time to their drive to “Kansas”), at best they’d be headed for Goodland with is just over the border, but still... While I’ll give them some leeway since Damon probably drives like a bat out of hell, it was already pretty late by the time they got those directions. So I really have to call BS on them even making it there by dawn, much less it still being the middle of the night when they were coming back (I assume, unless they were just going to keep driving back to MF, which would also make no sense because it takes hours just to cross Kansas let alone the other states between there and Virginia).
-Yes that is a random rant, but damn it this is my territory and my review so you get my random grievances with the way my part of the country is used.
-And because it can’t be said enough, I love you Rose but SHUT UP.
Next time:
The next episode is marginally better, but that may just mean I can laugh at it less, there’s still a lot that pisses me off about it.
