See watching it for the ways I could fanwank a connection back to RTD Who was the only way I got through s5 and I barely managed that. I LIKE Victory of the Daleks because I pretend Eleven is flipping out because it's only been a few hours for him since his whirlwind companion goodbye tour so he's reawakened a lot of his Dalek anger for ruining so much of his last couple lives. I like Amy's Choice because I pretend the Dream Lord was written to be write about how little Amy knows the Doctor since he hasn't mentioned so much of what TO ME defines who the Doctor is. That kind of thing.
River doesn't just ruin it for me on Rose's behalf, she just ticks SO MANY of my character dislike traits. AND knowing her end from the god awful Library eps makes it even more difficult to care because even when I truly deeply hated her character I hated that she got such a crappy ending even more.
He can't ruin something he can't touch
In all honesty for all my hatred of JE, THAT argument has always made me feel a little better. Not that I've forgiven RTD for it, but if he was to come out and say "I left Rose in Pete's World so Steve couldn't touch her" it would go a long way in helping me get there.
