Today kind of feels like a review day so I’d doing an afternoon Doctor Who and may be back with something else later (we’ll see, I’m not committing to it, just giving myself the option).

Doctor Who: 2x01: New Earth

This episode...is weird. It’s not very good, but usually enjoy it whenever I watch it. There’s some definite signs of people still figuring out this new season (not surprisingly, but ‘Rose’ started things so well that it’s a bit sad they couldn’t jump right in and have things in line).

This episode involves some pretty quick back-peddling on the whole “no second chances” thing TCI made such a big deal out of. It also has some awkward characterization for the Doctor and Rose around each other, they both seem solidly characterized away from each other but the dynamic between them hasn’t quite gelled yet to my eyes.

Rose seems a little too...air-headed sometimes; her scenes in the basement/with Cassandra feel like Rose, even Cassandra in the Doctor’s body Rose manages to maintain her own character; but with the Doctor...it’s not OOC, just feels less herself. And while I sort of feel RTD had a clear vision for how he Doctor was supposed to be regarding Rose, I’m not sure it came through very well. Their scenes together are fun, and the Doctor dealing with Cassandra-Rose trying to figure out what happened to Rose has some good intensity, and DT and BP clearly have the chemistry already; it all just feels a little off-set from what would be right.

And while I know body-swap episodes are a staple of sci-fi, I feel this one was kind of badly timed. As a season premier with the writers and actors still dealing with a major cast change and we haven’t really dealt with where the lead characters stand in their relationship outside a few minutes at the end of TCI. We should have used the time here to develop that rather than wacky body swapping hijinks.

Overall I just don’t have much to say about this one. I don’t feel a huge drive to defend this ep to its detractors but I don’t feel the need to tear it down either. There’s definitely some iffy stuff in the plot but I don’t worry so much about the plot as I do the story and the story was...decent. It doesn’t add much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a fun little romp.

While I don’t mind the mythos of the Face of Boe, and even can see some drama in Jack being the Face of Boe I don’t think I’ll ever actually support that silliness either. Just saying that now since Gridlock will give me so much else to complain about that I may forget to mention it (or I will since I do like to gripe about that idea of RTD’s).

Next time:
Why do I keep doing these when I really don’t know?

As always you’re welcome to suggest things.
