So it ended up being Doctor Who tonight.
Doctor Who: 1x12/1x13: Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways
There’s no sense starting this review any other way but pointing out that I LOVE these episodes. Even when I find myself being more critical than usual of it I ultimately love it anyway. It’s not completely perfect, there are flaws, but those flaws don’t detract very much from the overall story.
I’m pretty sure I’ve *never* watched these two episodes any way but back to back (aside from in pieces when vidding that is) so I have don’t really ever treat them like they’re separate episodes, it’s a ~90 min. movie with a random recap in the middle. And really I think that helps BW and doesn’t drag PotW down at all, because all the big stuff happens in PotW, but it couldn’t exist on its own either. PotW on its own would probably be more emotionally exhausting than watching them together is, you need to be eased into it.
Not that BW doesn’t have its intense moments. But it’s also the one I think has some more problems, in that the Doctor seems a bit...inconsistent about how much of a rush he’s in. That’s what most of it comes from, and it makes some weird implications on his vibe with Lynda. I don’t have a problem with Lynda per-se; or even with the idea that the Doctor would flirt with her but the timing is wrong. On the other hand, first time through that actually helped matters slightly in that you can almost believe that with replacement-Rose in place they might actually have killed Rose; but it definitely doesn’t flow right the more you rewatch it.
PotW is, as always, heartbreaking. It still has its (slight) issues, but it’s just so wonderful and well written and acted that the end result is just...beautiful. It’s epic without trying too hard, emotional without being hammy, RTD at his best. It set the bar high for all the other season finales; and while I think Doomsday comes close to matching it, none of the others have touched it. Of RTD’s that is, Moffat’s (the one that I’ve seen)( aren’t even on the same measuring stick, this is measuring in miles while Moff measures in inches so using the same ruler isn’t even fair.
Hmm, I don’t seem to have a lot to say tonight (and am verging on a truly random anti-Moffat rant). It’s not that I can’t have lots to say on good episodes, and I usually have lots of thoughts that tie in to these eps, but tonight words are not things I have (...which was kind of why I was watching a two parter to review anyway, no drive to write tonight).
Next time:
(shrug) we’ll see when I get to it, probably a longer review though...maybe.
