THIS EPISODE.

On Elijah/Katerina: I do think that he was developing feelings for her. The fact that she looked like Tatia must have had some influence, yes. I'm also pretty sure that whatever Elijah felt for Katerina, it wasn't reciprocated. So I doubt that anything happened, but he cared about her enough to go to the trouble of obtaining the elixir.

This might sound odd at first, but my interpretation of the Elijah/Katerina scenes as romantic actually makes them more about Elijah/Elena for me. I think the placement of those scenes in the episode is meant to show us that Elijah is developing feelings for Elena, just as he did five hundred years ago with Katerina.

There is one important difference in how Elijah falls for Elena, which is this:

Whereas his feelings for Elena are in spite of her being the doppelganger. - and the rest of that paragraph.

But otherwise the circumstances are similar enough that the comparison works. It's just before the ritual; Elijah is supposed to be sacrificing the doppelgänger, not starting to care about her; he certainly shouldn't be putting her before his duty to his family. That's why he tells Elena that he won't make the same mistake again. The fact that he has to say that shows that he's already developing the same feelings (i.e. romantic) that caused him to make that mistake with Katerina.

...So yep, the Elijah/Katerina scenes are more fuel for Elijah/Elena as far as I'm concerned, haha.

Sure he might have been going for ‘I won’t let my feelings get in the way of family this time around’ but even then, he’s looking at her like that when he says it

lol yes

I’m pretty sure all the doppelgangers were collapsing into each other for Elijah at that point. He’s flashing back to the moment he met Kat, where he’s clearly flashing back to Tatia and we just don’t get to see it.

Ah, perfect way to describe this! Yes, he's flashing back to a flashback, haha.

Elena’s seducing Elijah with honor and respect but her eyes are even ahead of that. She’s offering to work WITH him, which is something that we just don’t get in this show’s main relationships; someone’s always calling the shots and others react to it, but Elena and Elijah actually strike up a partnership.

Guh. Yes, I love that. She gets him; she knows exactly what buttons to press, and she means what she says too.

And it’s one thing to share Elena duties with Stefan and Bonnie but that Elena would pick Elijah over them to rely on doesn’t work for him. So basically he has to throw a tantrum and go abuse his pseudo-“girlfriend.”

Yep, I think that's exactly what happened with Damon. Stefan had just thrown the "respect" line at him, and then Elena waltzes in with Elijah and basically picks Elijah over both the Salvatores. (Not in a romantic way, but... you know.) She respects and trusts Elijah even though she barely knows him, and to Damon this is not only ludicrous, it's also a huge slap in the face. Hence tantrum.

this episode is perfect because it’s about Elijah and the relationship between Elijah and Elena where they actually talk to each other about things. Everything else in the episode matters a lot less than that fact.

Yes. This was an amazing review that talked about all the most important parts of the episode.
