Okay, so I decided I could stand to rewatch this one and post some thoughts on it and possible places for the finale to go.

Let’s start with a few things that just need to be said:

-So they need all the vampire muscle they can get to take down Alaric, and no one calls Elijah (or Kol)? If they’re going to have to wait around for Abby, and for Bonnie to learn the spell, anyway why not call in some backup? And stand by my heory that lijah is totally the ideas man of the family, and they could use some ideas. Until proven otherwise I’m going to have to assume that Klaus knew Elijah would never let him abduct Elena once they were done with Alaric, and calling Kol but not Elijah would make people ask questions.

-But seriously, I may have to write AU fic where either Elijah is there for the showdown at the school (where he would have been the first to point out if there was any reason Alaric didn’t want Elena dead he’d better not call her bluff) or shows up in time to rescue Elena from Klaus, or at least shows up just after the episode ends (if that’s not how it happens anyway) because I’m a sucker for that kind of thing.

-I also catch myself laughing when the actual Originals use "Always and forever" now, since we know Elijah's totally jumped ship and Elena's his always and forever now. Which also means the writers totally didn't slip up when they had Elijah use it in the letter, they've kept the others using it, and they can't have missed the fact that it was used for the Elena/Elijah story too.

-Jeremy may be the most sane person on the show, although someone could definitely argue he’s showing the same early signs Alaric did of going into anti-vampire mode, but I think being anti-vampire is a perfectly sane thing to be contrary to the show’s opinion.

-At one point I had a rather detailed notion involving Klaus finding Elijah’s resurrection elixir to explain how Elena was all hunky-dory after massive blood loss and head trauma, but once I started examining it closer I found several holes in the theory so I guess I’ll hold off it.

-Because seriously, the show was obviously hinting at something there that hasn’t been explained yet. No way do they put that much focus on Elena hitting her head on the step and *not* have it mean something.

-The Gilberts should not pursue careers in painting. For the love of god kids, take down the blinds when you’re painting around the window , at minimum roll them up.

Klaus thoughts:

Oh Klaus. You’ll never be as cool as Elijah but you are great to have around. If we ever needed proof that Klaus will never be as cool as Elijah just compare them throwing stuff. Elijah managed to make it look dignified and menacing and cool all at once, Klaus comes off as a hooligan. It was fun to watch but what it wasn’t was scary; Elijah picks up a handful of gravel and the reaction is “oh shit,” Klaus terrorizes someone’s picket fence and the response is LOL.

I can’t figure out if Klaus is delusional or putting on a brave face when he talks about Esther having brought the family closer together. Rebekah walked out on him just that morning and Rebekah’s been the most forgiving. Plus if there was one thing besides redaggering the siblings that would put Elijah back on the war path against Klaus it’s killing Elena like this (have I made my shipping clear enough yet :) )

As much as Elena totally deserves better, I’d have been kind of interested to see the Klaus, Stefan, Elena road trip idea. Now there’s a love triangle I could be interested in as Klaus and Elena battle for Stefan’s soul. Of course I might end up rooting for Klaus just because I find Klaus/Stefan way more interesting than Stefan/Elena (of course what I’d *really* be rooting for would be Elijah to show up, school his brother royally, rescue Elena, and leave Stefan to look after a weakened Klaus. Yes these are the kinds of thoughts I have but will never write).

Triangle thoughts:

Okay, as much as I still hate the way it’s being used, I did appreciate that this week we actually got some good characterization out of the triangle drama. Exploring Elena’s unwillingness to do anything that would cause her to lose someone else, the Stefan and Damon talk was nice, in spite of leaving out any mention of Katherine (does anyone else catch themselves having to stop and remember whether to call her Katherine or Katerina or have I just been writing too much stuff with Elijah recently where I have to keep straight who’s talking to know what to call her at any given mention), even Klaus’s manipulations were at least fun.

They’re definitely setting up for Elena not to make a choice in the finale. Or at least not choosing either of them. She may choose herself or Matt or whatever but given the way this episode discussed it, there’s no way this season is ending with her as a Salvatore girlfriend.

However, shut it Caroline, again. It probably wouldn’t bug me here much if at all if it weren’t for her behavior in the previous episode. But she keeps acting like Elena must choose a Salvatore instead of encouraging Elena to dump both their asses (which even Damon recognizes would probably be her smartest move) rubs me the wrong was after her “either way [Elena]’s kind of spoken for” thing last week. You know what Care, maybe she’s weighing her option and waiting for a better one to come along (and the fact that I think Matt IS a better choice has...only some to do with my annoyance with that scene).

I did make it to the end of this section without mentioning that I think Elijah is a pretty damn good other option too, but it needs to be said.

Spare thoughts:

-I may have actually LIKED Tyler this episode, this is shocking. Even more I may have liked Tyler/Caroline for a few moments.

-Years of TV watching have taught me that that party scene was a guarantee that the finale is going to do something awful. A single moment of the characters being happy means things are about to get even worse than they already are.

-The scenes between Elena and Alaric were awesome, in so many ways even if I don’t feel like going into it right now (I’m rambling enough already and we still have the promo to get to).

-Yay for Elena and Jeremy scenes.

-YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES to Alaric playing the Founders’ Council. I crave FC drama because I love it so much.

Okay, you knew it was coming so let’s get to it, the trailer:

ELIJAH. So very terrified for him but DAMN HE’S LOOKING FINE.

I have my theory that Elijah’s going to show up at the start of the episode, fix (at least temporarily) what’s up with Elena and make a deal with her that he gets Klaus’s body before the boys dump it in the ocean. This way TPTB get to keep Klaus in play even if he’s desiccated, not being dropped in the ocean keeps their options open for next season.

“I’ll leave it to you to decide whether or not to trust me.” THAT’S SUCH AN ELIJAH/ELENA LINE, it had better be between them and not involving the others, because that would just be wrong. THE RETURN OF THE TRUST EXERCISES OF MY SHIP. This will make me happy even if I’m watching the whole thing through my hands because I’m so scared for Elijah.

I choose to believe the promo monkeys are messing with us, especially those who know/have read the books. Because I can’t deal with the idea that they would kill Elena obviously, but I also don’t think they CAN turn Elena into a vampire on the show. I just don’t think it would work; they gave Caroline the baby-vamp storyline, and Elena is already plenty isolated from normal life, making her a vampire would add nothing new to the show. Nor do I think the show is smart enough to make it work, I just hope it’s smart enough to know that it’s not smart enough for that.

IF they insist on doing it though I will in no way, shape, or form believe that Elena chooses to turn. Out of everything she’s done this season the one choice she ALWAYS accepts people making is the choice NOT to become a vampire. If she’d come around to the idea that he vampire life could work I’m pretty sure she’d have said *something* to that effect when Bill and Alaric were dying, so I’m left with the inescapable reading that she’s very very clear on why people would choose to die rather than become vampires because still thinks that way. She may choose to turn if her hand is forced (being the one in the turn or die situation) but she’s not going to go to one of the guys and be all “I want to be a vamp now.”

So basically both halves of my OTP (plus my backup one since Matt’s in the car too) are making me feel really tense over the next episode. There are so many ways this could be screwed up or do something that will make me flounce all over the place, and so few ways I can see getting out of this episode with my sanity intact. Either way there will probably be much fic required over the summer hiatus (and on the very off chance this ends exactly how I want it to I’m going to be HELLA INSPIRED to write fic in that glorious hypothetical world where Elena and Elijah do Europe (and possibly each other in Europe).
