This story has been woefully under-appreciated, I think, and while you wrote it some time ago, I would be remiss if I didn't comment and let you know.
The pain that runs through this is palpable but strangely lovely. Elijah both offering comfort to Elena and taking it for himself just makes my heart ache for him. I think I like the lack of resolution the best though; authors generally shy away from that sort of realism, but this story is better for your willingness to go there.
