‘A Fistful of Paintballs/For a Few Paintballs More'
I have to say I like the first part of this two-parter better than the second. I think a lot of that has to do with having Annie as the clear lead character for what’s happening in part 1 and the focus being more spread out in part 2. Now it fits with the story in part 2 that the narrative is broader in that part, since it’s become the battle for Greendale instead of focused on the study group’s internal issues, but there are tradeoffs for that kind of thing.
Aside from thinking the transition between the two parts is a bit abrupt (although the do hang a lampshade on that fact) taken together these eps are still AWESOME. Even watched for the purpose of reviewing I mostly just focused on the awesome rather than any issues with it.
If I am going to be critical I can make a couple points:
-Britta didn’t really get to shine much this time around, even in two parts she was mostly in the background.
-Part of the problem with the shift away from Annie focus in part 2, her actions in that part make a little less sense, though it’s not bad it’s just as clear.
-I still get upset at them setting off the paint sprinkler in the library, WON’T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE BOOKS?!?!?
-It’s a BIT contrived that everyone the audience has met is still in the game by part 2 to be part of the rebel alliance (except Rich come to think of it).
On the last point I acknowledge the contrivance and move on because it gives all these background characters a moment of two to shine, and I approve of that.
I can’t decide if I hope there’s paintball in s3 again. On one hand I don’t want them to rely on it, or get in a situation where they feel they have to top themselves each year, or the other it has been good so far and this was better than Modern Warfare in most ways so it’s hard to say it would be a mistake before seeing what they might do. But then I kind of think the blanket fort eps could be considered s3’s answer to paintball so...I’m just undecided.
Since I don’t have a lot to say about the ep I’ll mention that I’m always thought I ought to do a vid to Should’ve Been a Cowboy, but it’s mostly a part 1 song rather than the whole thing. That’s the excuse I give for never having done it anyway.
Next time:
Doctor Who: ‘End of the World’
I’m adding Community’s D&D ep to the list, since as a roleplayer I’ve always wanted to give my two cents on that one, though I expect it’ll be more like a dollar.
