Haha, Damon tends to do that! I know you said it´s not easy to not write him (and Stefan) too awful but I really liked what you did with them - a lot of writers don´t know how to deal with them in an EE story so they just get rid of them or make them complete je*ks with no character at all just to show the contrast to how Elijah treats Elena. It´s a little awkward to read then, although I obviously don´t want them in the story more than necessary either. So YES, you kept them short, didn´t robbed them of personality, presented their pov and explained the shift in Elena´s view of them. All of them in character. Besides Damon trying to figure out how to heat his blood (5-6 brilliant paragraphs) is some vision!lol I very much enjoyed.
Klaus/Elijah relationship is complex and layered and should be explored as such. It can be powerful in many ways (the good or the destructive ways). In the show they tend to make it black/white when it suits them because of some plots and disregard the character development. Finn´s death (and Kol´s speaking of dead brothers) - in relation to Elijah - they just ignored it (which is also completely OOC for him)... or was it dealt with off screen? *sigh* I will always prefer your way! :D
