f_march_madness preliminary voting.
Sci-fi shows
BSG/Caprica:
Sigh, look, I know Laura's character kind of faded in season 4 (to the point where for that season she's not even *my* favorite character any more) but she's still the best over all and I was really hoping fandom would agree. I...like Starbuck...mostly. But she's really never my favorite.
I also think it's a bit unfair to Caprica to lump these chows together (although I get why, there's a lot of shows in this category). It's just getting started and the BSG characters can be judged over the whole show, it's just not a great comparison, leaving the Caprica characters at a severe disadvantage, which is reflected in the voting. Maybe next year when it's got some momentum going this mash up will work better.
BtVS/AtS:
I'm just happy SPIKE LOST. I'm not sure I cared about my beloved Giles winning half as much as I cared about Spike losing. But there's so many great characters between these two shows that in spite of how overwhelmingly I LOVE GILES, it was still a hard choice.
Doctor Who/Torchwood
What, no SJA? Not that it would have changed my vote, but still, it would be nice to count it. As expected the DW characters dominate when these fields are mashed together, there's just more people who love the parent show more.
But how can I say this diplomatically? I can't really believe Donna won. I like/love Donna, but over the Doctor and Rose? Never. I shouldn't be hurt by this but really, if people were going to give it to a companion over the Doctor it should have been Rose (who was my vote over all) because Rose is a WAY better done character than Donna. Donna may be awesome and lovable, but she's not Rose, and she's not the Doctor.
Dollhouse:
Basically as long as Echo and Paul (and even they were less annoying in season 2) didn't win I'm more or less okay. Sure I think Adelle DeWitt is easily the most awesome character on the show and got my vote about as soon as I got to her name (which is at the top of the Dollhouse list), but Topher is okay I guess. I would have placed several more characters above him (Sierra, Victor, Whiskey, Boyd) I'm still okay with his winning.
Farscape:
Yes I voted for Aeryn too, but I can still be sad no one else got nearly that much love. As much as I love her too everyone, there are other characters I love in much closer ratios than this poll puts fandom at.
Firefly:
Mal was never my favorite character on the show, but I don't suppose I'm surprised by him being fandom's choice. Again, lots of lovable characters so there were only a couple I would have been upset by winning, but still, Mal's not my top choice.
Merlin:
Well I'm glad everyone (but Gauis and my own choice Uther) got plenty of votes, the results certainly aren't surprising. However, as I don't really have a lot of strong feelings on this show to begin with we can just more on.
Pushing Daisies:
Look, I like Olive, but I'm not exactly happy she won. Of the four leads she's probably my least favorite and I have more of a soft spot for the aunts than I really spend much time of Olive. I'm not sure I'm upset by this choice, but it means I'm less likely to vote for PD as a show given that it's not being represented by a character I have huge amounts of love for.
Smallville:
Aside from watching Micheal Shanks' recent guest spot (score one for stunt casting) I haven't watched this show in years, but I still feel loyal enough to *Chloe* that I had to vote in it. And the recent show I watched reminded me of tat love too, so my vote had some merit. And so YAY for Chloe.
Stargate SG1/SGA/SGU
Score of for Stargate Original Recipe, which is of course where my heart belongs. That being said NOOOOOOOO DANIEL!!!!! My beloved Daniel didn't win and I am sad. As much as I love Sam (and she probably would have been my second choice), she's not Daniel because no one else is Daniel. My love for Daniel Jackson is pretty epic.
X-Files:
GO SCULLY. Again, either of the two leads are characters I love, but I'm glad fandom gave the nom to Scully this time because she's brilliant and amazing. Although I do feel bad for my boy Skinner losing to Krycek even. Skinner deserves better.
I knew I was going to have a lot to comment on in this set, so like I said, we'll put the rest in another post (I can't remember how many I have to comment on but I think it'll only be one more, we'll see...again).
