I love Robin the best. I have to admit I'm not the biggest Ted fan, but he doesn't annoy me quite as much as when I started watching.
I know what you mean about Barney. I only started to love him in S4, but he really was SUCH a stereotype in the earlier seasons.
They don't add all that much usually and they're not all that interesting most of the time, but sometimes they're good and they do serve the purpose of reminding viewers that this is being told in flashback. Still, iffy.
I don't usually like VO, but I do like that Ted can be an unreliable narrator, so you don't really know whether or not to trust some of the hints he drops.
