Author’s Notes (flashback): Originally written May 2011. I don’t think people really approved of the way I approached the prompt of this one if I recall correctly and am guessing a little. But it’s a scenario I like to play with because I like mixed up timelines.

The hard toes of Rose’s boots kicked at the ridges in the concrete as she craned to look through the crowd. She wasn’t going to be able to convince the police to let her into the building and she could only watch one exit so there were plenty of ways she could miss the Doctor, she didn’t need to add a blocked view to the list of possibilities.

She was certain she’d finally found him, this universe was the one where he existed and was still alive. It had to be him that had stopped the Adipose before they could do all the damage she knew they could do to the human race. He had to be here, but where was he? How to actually make contact with him had always been a difficult part of this plan, they could only be so accurate flinging her across the Void at some point they had to count on luck that she would be able to get to him.

She was still squinting at the building entrance when she heard a familiar voice behind her. She smiled as she turned, good old Donna Noble, the woman with the best timing in any universe it seemed. Donna was chattering excitedly on her mobile to someone about leaving her keys for them to find. Had Rose ever heard Donna that happy in the other universe? Probably not, because it was only now Rose realized how infectious the other woman’s excitement was.

Donna tossed her keys in a nearby bin and then turned and caught Roses eye. Easy to do since Rose was walking briskly towards her but Rose also thought maybe she saw something that was almost recognition in Donna’s gaze. It was impossible, but Donna was an impossible woman so it might not be such a stretch.

“Oy,” Donna said, pointing at Rose, “think you can make sure my mum finds the car keys?”

“No,” Rose replied, which made Donna glare just as Rose continued, “I was hoping you might be able to help me with something actually.”

“Oh, and why should I do that?”

“Because I think we’re looking for the same person. The Doctor?”

“Who are you?” Donna exclaimed.

Rose hesitated a moment, if Donna hadn’t met the Doctor yet then her knowing who Rose was would be a huge problem. It could make things worse if that was possible with the universes falling into darkness. “Please, have you seen him? Maybe even around here?”

Donna studied Rose for a long moment; her gaze was intense and even after everything that had happened Rose fought the urge to fidget with her sleeves as she waited for a response. “What’s he getting us into now?” she finally said.

“Usual, the possible end of everything.”

“Oh, no pressure then,” Donna said with much less excitement than Rose had used. “Come on then, might as bring you along.”

Rose’s face split into the widest smile she was sure she’d worn in years. He was here, and soon she’d see him again. She could talk a good game about the universes being more important than her being able to find the Doctor, but just now he was all she wanted.

“Who are you?” Donna asked again as they walked into an alleyway. When Rose still didn’t answer she asked, “Any chance you’re Rose?”

Rose stopped in her tracks so abruptly she almost fell over and turned to stare at Donna. Her surprise was all the answer Donna seemed to need, and she smiled. “Not lost anymore I take it? Come on.”

She led Rose around another corner into a narrow street where the blue car Rose knew belong to Donna’s family was parked, and behind that was the TARDIS. It was lit and alive, the way it was supposed to be, the way it always had been and although Rose’s broad smile returned there were tears in her eyes as her feet continued towards the Doctor’s time machine.

She was almost at the door when she realized Donna wasn’t next to her any more. She glanced back briefly and saw Donna smiling and nodding for Rose to go on without her. Rose took a deep breath and pushed open the blue door.

The Doctor was standing at the consol, poking at buttons the way he did. “So, where shall we be off to?” he asked before he looked up. When he did and he saw her, he froze except for the way the emotions played across his eyes.

“Doctor,” she said softly, taking a step towards him.

“Rose,” he said breathlessly, his voice dripping with wonderment, surprise, uncertainty, and more than anything love.

How many times had she dreamed of this? How many times had she told herself this moment would come, especially after she’d found him dead in that other world? All those dreams paled in comparison to this reality because it was reality. Everything seemed to slow down even as her feet ran towards him and he finally broke the spell to step towards her and gather her in his arms.

As they clung to each other Rose’s eyes kept crying and her heart raced, but it was joy that flowed through her because she had finally come home.

“Rose,” the Doctor whispered again, this time into her hair so she could feel his breath on her skin, “how can you be here?” He almost sounded like he didn’t care but it reminded her of what she was here to do even if all she wanted was to stay locked in his arms.

She sighed, and sadly got to business, “We better get Donna, we’ve got a lot to talk about.”
