Torchwood 2x02 quick thoughts

Alright Torchwood writers, you're getting better at this I was actually moved by this episode. Looks like you guys actually learned from the mistakes of last year and are crafting better episodes, haven't shown yet if you can or are trying to craft arcs (I like arcs) but at least the episodes are better.

British actor bingo, actress playing Beth was also on Robin Hood in S1, I even went to check IMDB to be sure I wasn't imaging things but being as I knew she was familiar and it being England and all I figured there was a reason.

I do have some BSG thoughts brought on by this episode (how could I not, really?) but it's kind of half formed, I couldn't quite get distracted enough to just be thinking deep thoughts about cylons. See, good Torchwood, my mind might think other stuff but I was kept on your show even when you're ripping off BSG and Terminator in one blow.

More team episodes, I'm liking this, keep it up, ensemble eps were the best last season and this season is proving it further. Although this could have used more actual character moments, and maybe some explanation for Jack snapping back into meanJack, seriously the Doctor would not approve.

And seriously there were at least four of these things in Cardiff?

I was totally thinking about BSG too. I mean, pretty obvious, right...

I didn't terribly mind the rip-off, though.

You know re: mean!Jack. I confess, I don't understand? Jack has always been ruthless and while he's no longer angsting about the Doctor and Rose he's also still damaged and there is John out there. We've seen how John is and it's clear that's what Jack was before meeting the Doctor and Rose.

I think it's great that they're doing this. I just hope that the team stands up to him more. Not just Gwen. They all need to tell him to cool it. Because what he's doing isn't cool.

Far from saying mean!Jack is out of character (which apparently people are saying), I'm just saying I wish the writers would settle on what causes mean!Jack to come out, or if it's something he reverts to easily deal with what that does to his character. Where does this switching personality come from and how does it change him? There were a couple times in season one where I had issues because Hack was just randomly angry at...something. Sure being emo!Jack and all, but some reason would be nice.

On one hand I know it's that TW is a different universe and mentality than DW but I don't think characters can just float between them and not have their actions in one influence the other. Their character development can't just jump because now their in X universe rather than Y, at least the elements of one should still be there in the other, and I'm still not sure they're pulling that off with Jack.

But Jack is different with the Doctor. With Torchwood he's in charge and he's got a lot on his shoulders. With the Doctor, he's the side kick and the Doctor is the one who tends to save the day and have all the answers.
