More Marvel babble
So, baseball is done for a few months, now the extent of my interest in sport can hibernate for the winter, there's not even the Olympics to break it up. Oh well Royals, I was rooting for you, but you got outplayed in the end, if my Rockies are so disappointing again next year I'll be back to pay attention to you guys again.
And now back to fandom...with some more talk about AoS and the larger MCU.
Age of Ultron
Was Maria Hill at the group hang out in the spoiler scene, because I thought I saw her in a couple shots? That would be great by me, I love Maria Hill. And it makes sense since she was going to work for Stark after the fall of SHIELD anyway.
I’m still expecting New SHIELD to be revealed to the Avengers midway through the movie, for Coulson to brush off the questions about how he’s alive with some half truth that won’t make much sense to people who don’t watch the show, and maybe tiny cameos for the rest of the AoS team.
I approve of the fact that it seems Ultron is either made of Tony’s tech or is possessing Tony’s suits. As I understand it, that isn’t how it works in the comic, but it’s a logical adaptation to make for the MCU. Also, I think we could get some good AoS lead up on the machine uprising front.
Damn Disney for owning Marvel, therefore able to use the Pinocchio song in the trailer, I’ve had it in my head for hours as a weird combination of the lighthearted movie version and the creepy trailer version.
Cap 3
You know, play AoU right and I may almost believe Tony would fill his comic role in Civil War. As is, I don’t buy movie Tony as being on the side of Big Brother at all, but if I’m right about it being Tony’s suits being used against them in AoU I can buy Tony coming out of that crisis feeling like heroes need to be more responsible and so standing on the pro-registration side.
Up until that potential tie between AoU and Cap3, I couldn’t see how they could possibly push Tony into that kind of position. As I understand it comics Tony was the Secretary of Defense at the time (something movie Tony would be very poorly suited to go anywhere near) and went on to become head of SHIELD (I guess he’s overseeing Hill’s offshoot, but he’s unlikely pretty to lead SHIELD itself I’d say), on top of it just seeming really out of character for the Tony the movies have presented. But like I said, done right I can now see a way to get a version of it.
(Yeah I’ve given way more thought to Tony in this situation than Cap in his movie.)
Cynically, I do kind of wonder if pulling up the Civil War story, one of the more famous modern stories even to fringe comics fans like me, is doubling down in the face down with DC against the Superman/Batman movie. Yeah, Marvel’s not planning to blink any time soon.
Upcoming projects
I still don’t know why Ant Man is a thing Marvel is doing, who cares about Ant Man?
Damn it Marvel, you’re still going to let DC beat you to the punch on big budget female superheroes? And fans have been wishing for a Black Widow movie since Avengers (sure it would have basically just been a spy movie, but damn it, people wanted it). I’m sure Ms. Marvel will be better than the Wonder Woman movie in the joyless DC-verse, but you didn’t need to wait so long to get to it.
I do worry that we may be reaching a point of market saturation, but I do want to see these movies, so I guess not completely. Guess time will tell. On the other hand I think I’m looking forward to the other “TV” series, though for now I’m just in it for Agent Carter.
Agents of SHIELD
I guess I needed to sleep on the episode to wonder, were we supposed to feel sorry for Ward this time around? Because I haven’t been less on his side all season, and I was just shy of egging Fitz on when he was trying to kill the bastard. Sometimes I forget to give much thought to what Ward might be doing because I never liked the character, he started out as a bland dope who I barely noticed onscreen and never thought about when he wasn’t, to being a villain which made him more interesting but never sympathetic to me.
I guess all season I’ve been aware that they needed to be careful going to him for intel; he was only going to tell them things as it suited him, like only being willing to talk to Skye and not actually offering any help beyond what he was directly asked, and probably the fact that he kept trying to get back on the topic of Skye’s father. But I never got the feeling like any of them were really taken in by him, he was just there to smooth over plot gaps as the writers needed. But it was never so clear to me until this episode that he must have a game plan in this; get Skye to let him out on the promise of going to find her father; a combination of her seeming like the weak link in the team and that he does have a twisted kind of affection for her and maybe does sickly want her to forgive him in spite of the fact that she’s made it damn clear she’s not going to.
I’m not quite sure how him trying to appeal to Coulson on the basis of the team fits in to it though. Because, that’s kind of a weird track to take when he clearly hadn’t laid the groundwork to get at Coulson’s renewed affection until now. Maybe it’s a Hail Mary play that he shouldn’t be surprised failed. But as much as I liked that moment, thinking about Ward’s motivations and plans in this make it seem a touch odd.
In any case, I expect Ward’s out for a few episodes, but I don’t know where he’s going from there. And wow his is probably the most I’ve ever actually thought about anything Ward does.
Some random meta about my shipping tastes in the MCU
Ages ago I got into a discussion with someone about how Tony/Pepper was (at the time) my only real ship in the MCU, while I kinda sorta tolerated Steve/Peggy for what it was rather than thinking it might have been something more and Thor/Jane just bugs the crap out of me. Whoever I was discussing it with didn’t like Tony/Pepper because he had been thrown into the middle of their story instead of seeing how they got started, which we did get with the other two (I guess neither of us had seen Hulk).
Thinking back on that talk always makes me laugh, because basically everything I ship in the MCU are ships we joined in the middle of their story. Coulson/May took over my top ship spot a while ago, and they have literally decades of history we don’t really know much about. Tony/Pepper is probably still my second favorite ship, followed by Fitz/Simmons, Clint/Natasha, and maybe a little Steve/Bucky to round out the top five.
But Thor/Jane still seems super shallow to me, and while I don’t actually have ships in the Thor movies I’m a little torn between Thor/Loki and Thor/Sif on what I might be persuaded to support. I’ve come to like Skye and Ward as individuals a fair bit, but have no desire to see them as a couple or even of the same side of the war. I’m perfectly glad Peggy got on with her life after Steve disappeared and don’t feel it a grand romantic tragedy (really, bring on Agent Carter).
Of the relationships we’ve seen develop from their beginning, I see them mostly as friendships; Tony-Bruce, Steve-Natasha, Steve-Sam, and the like. Okay, there might be some wiggle room on AoS, where even if I don’t ship something I can at least see the idea of it in places, but that’s a TV show so there’s more room for that kind of thing.
Also, what is this fandom’s obsession with Coulson/Hawkeye? It never made any sense to me and makes less so all the time.
