Wishing for happy endings
This week's
fannish5 is right up my alley, so I'll answer it.
5characters or couples you wish could have gotten a happy/happier ending.
Doctor/Rose (Doctor Who)
Even people who are satisfied with the end we got have to admit it isn’t the happiest ending possible (I suppose you don’t have to, but I know a lot do). For some of my f-list the end we got was enough, for me it was...not.
I’m still not okay with the way it ended, and every time I think I might have reached a level of zen about it something comes along and sets me off again. I don’t think I ever will fully accept it, because I wanted them to get a real happy ending. I love this couple too much to be satisfied with a half effective implied happy ending, I want my OTP to get to have the life they want.
Guy/Marian (Robin Hood)
It doesn’t get much worse than their ending, so of course I want them to have a better one. I’m not even sure I need to say much on the subject, because why I want them to have a different end should be obvious.
Gene/Alex (Ashes to Ashes)
I don’t hate the ending they got, and I can certainly live with the idea that one day Gene will join Alex and the others in the Pub and there will be afterlife parties so I’m willing to be chill with the end the show gave us. But that doesn’t mean I don’t *wish* Alex and Gene had gotten to actually be together, have more than a goodbye kiss, etc. It’s a tragedy they didn’t get that but it’s not exactly surprising either.
Susan/Marcus (Babylon 5)
I considered using John/Delenn, but they at least had 20 good years together; Susan and Marcus never even got started, and I wanted them to. Again there’s not a lot to say on the subject, it’s just sad the way it ended and I wish they could have had a happier ending, or happy at al for that matter.
Lee/Kara (Battlestar Galactica)
I debated between them and Adama/Roslin, but I’m going with the pilots. Partly because the show jerked them around so much and I wanted them to actually work out in the end. Only for the end to not only be unsatisfying but confusing. Partly because I rooted for them longer. And partly because by the end of the show I’d lost most of my interest in A/R mostly because I was so very mad at Bill (of at least the way the writers presented him) the half the last season or so. So yeah, I thought the pilot pair deserved better.

I've heard about the Marcus story, heard some pretty bad things abut it too. Plus with that one while I wanted them to get a happy ending, the fact that they didn't wasn't a betrayal of the story and characters. I do wish RTD would write some Pete's World adventures, actually seeing the happy side of the ending would probably help; it wouldn't fix the writing in JE but it might justify the story choice.
Lee and Kara just...ARG.

I was accidentally spoiled for what happened to Marcus on B5. It frustrates me on the one hand because he's such a wonderful character and I'm pretty sure he'd have been my favourite, and Susan/Marcus would have been my OTP, but knowing his fate stopped me from getting too attached. On the other hand, maybe it's for the best because I'd have taken it pretty badly
And I've avoided reading *that* short story because I've heard from so many people that I'd end up wishing I hadn't XD

Anyway, you're always welcome to stop by through whatever reason.
And you know all those years ago I'm pretty sure I was spoiled for Marcus's death. Admittedly, for me that was a matter of 'this hiatus is driving me NUTS, what's going to happen in the last few eps of the season? (plus following whether there was going to be a season 5)' But I'm pretty sure it put me off spoilers until I got into Buffy in college (what? so I watched B5 in middle/high school and Buffy in college, what do you mean that's weird? (apparently I'm on a parenthetical random comment kick today)).
I've never read "that" story either, I've heard enough about it to feel wishy washy about whether I should read it. Certainly not strongly enough to seek it out.
