BSG fianle post 1

Okay, so I finally realized the best way to handle my reaction to the finale was on a character by character basis. There are definitely some structures things, general comments, and overarching themes that need commenting on, but this post is about the characters and how everyone, well main characters for now, ended up.

Bill – Nope, doesn’t look like Bill has learned anything throughout the series. He still only really cares about the Bill Adama test of right and wrong. It seems a lot of the time he doesn’t really care about the fate of humanity, just how the measure on the Adama measuring stick. I wish I had much confidence he would eventually come back and see what remains of his family but I don’t know, he seems pretty committed to his abandonment of them.

Bill in the past – I have no idea what the point of that was, it was really just kind of dumb. It didn’t add anything to the story or my understanding of his character.

Laura – Sigh, Laura still didn’t get to do anything this week. She hasn’t gotten to do anything for weeks but I was hoping she’d have a role to play in the finale. At least it would have been nice for her to be in on the decisions regarding how humanity was going to continue on, but instead that was left to a variety of less important people whose story was less *about* the survival and continuation of the human race.

Laura in the past – Was much less interesting this week, because it had less connection with what was going on in the ‘now’. The death of her family resonated last week with her facing her own death, but this one was just…random.

Lee – Oh, Lee. That about sums up my feelings about Lee. It was nice to see him back in uniform before the attack started which is about the only reassuring thing I can say for him. Poor boy is I fear going to go and lose himself out in the wilds in an effort to escape the fact that he’s lost virtually everyone he cares about, probably seeing ghosts along the way. Why did they have to take everything from him?

Lee in the past – So we know when the Lee/Kara hotness started, with lots of booze and democracy talk. I feel bad for Zak that his brother and girlfriend were pretty much always all over each other it turns out. But thank you past-Lee for articulating this issue with Bill so nicely.

Kara - ... ...? Huh? So. Very. Confused. So the Kara we’ve had for the last season was ghost-Kara? I’m still pissed off enough about Maelstrom like two+ years later but I was hoping for a better explanation for why Kara’s special destiny required her committing suicide after all this time; I needed that more even than an explanation for how she came back. Never mind the question why Kara wasn’t out in a viper during the attack…when *was* the last time we saw Kara be a viper pilot anyway? On the plus side her goodbyes to Sam, Bill, and Lee were all really well done (if the last very random) and made me cry.

Kara in the past – I’m not sure there’s much that needs to be said for it. It was good to see more of past-Kara just for the contrast, but I’m not sure we actually learned anything new.

Gauis – I still have no idea what Gaius’ cult was about. Also I’m still pissed off at him for asking for preferential treatment based on religious last week. Anyway, Gauis says a lot of things and I very seldom understand the words he says. I’m glad he tried to find a peaceful way out of it, and it made sense in character (the actual words not so much). He just bugs me.

Six – So...if we’re ending with Six/Gauis as a big love story what was all that nonsense about Six and Tigh being all true love and stuff? Just nonsense, okay then. I’m actually glad they ended up together because that makes sense, just objecting to the mini-arc where they confused pity-sex and delusion-sex leading to baby with love. Also the fact that she didn’t actually *do* all that much in the finale means I’m dwelling on that.

Head!Gauis and Head!Six – Yep, still confused there. They were so not written as “angels” all that often throughout the series. Yes, at least Head!Six tended to have a major investment in Hera but the end just does. not. make. sense.

Athena – I really don’t have much to say on Athena she was just...there to me. And I’m kind of pissed at her for shooting Boomer. Kind of understandable (we know she’s not at all forgiving of people who mess with Hera) but still, you also might have expected her to have a little more understanding for the shit that Boomer went through. Either don’t forgive her but give her another chance or forgive her and shoot her but not forgiving her and shooting her didn’t sit right with me.

Boomer – Boomer died about how I figured she would, well except I didn’t figure Athena would do it, but the way it came about was about what I expected. And I do think she found some peace with herself before she died this way, which was really the best I thought we could hope for her.

Boomer in the past – That was poorly written and useless. Would it have been so bad to leave what Boomer owed the fleet at making up for all the times she’d helped screw them over? Or just chose to save Hera from having her brain sliced up? Or finally, knowing she’d die either way chose to side with the fleet because it was the right thing to do? Having Adama and Tigh call her “Rook” a hundred times wasn’t all that necessary.

Secondary characters in post two.

Yes. Thank you. It's really nice to read this opinion.

But then it wouldn't be all about Adama and we can't have that!

(that is one man that I am not going to miss)

I think the entire thing can be summed up as wwwwwah?
