Shippy ponderings

Since I doubt this is just me, I thought I'd pose it as a discussion question.

What ships do you guys have that when another ship, which you may or may not have an opinion on is compared to it, your feelings on the subject alter.

For me, one of the big ones is Buffy/Giles. I see them as shippy, a lot of people don't. So when other relationships are compared to it, or in general as Watcher/Slayer dynamics I find myself wanting to ship them (even though the person making the statement usually seems to see it as a father/daughter relationship).

I doubt I would have considered shipping Mal/River, and probably would have dismissed Mal/Kaylee until someone, or someones (I don't recall who) compared them to Buffy and Giles. By extension in a Dollhouse info thing on TWoP the Echo/some guy relationship was also compared to Buffy/Giles-Watcher/Slayer stuff so even though I haven't yet even watched Dollhouse, to me they must be shippy. Because Buffy/Giles is one of my all time OTPs, so anything compared to it in my head becomes shippy.

I'm trying to think of a flip side, negative impact example but I don't seem to run into those as often, or at least not as recently.

Hm also with Buffy/Giles is the chemistry SMG and ASH have.

I don't ship Buffy/Giles, but the characters on Dollhouse you're referring too... I started shipping them during the most recent episode!

I tend to have very predictable ships, but I don't think I really care who other people ship as long as they don't care who I ship, you know?

Same here. There are reasons certain ships are popular though. And I can completely see why they are.

Yeah, some people think these Dollhouse characters have a very father/daughter type relationship, but I don't think so. I can see why they think that because it's clear that his job is to take care of her, but I think there's more to it than just that, you know? I'm not completely shipping them yet (I mean, I've only seen two episodes), but I'm starting to.

Just adding on to that and your Buffy/Giles shipping, I hate when viewers only take age into account when they decide what a relationship is like. I've seen people refer to Nine as like a father figure for Rose and I'm like "ARE YOU BLIND?!"

Yeah, same here.

Yeah, I see why some people see the father/daughter relationship with some ships, but there has to be a reason. I can see why people think of the relationship between the two characters on Dollhouse as father/daughter, but I see something different.

The whole character age vs. actor age is just ridiculous. My sister was fine with Angel/Buffy and Spike/Buffy, but I know Nine/Rose would creep her out because of the actors' age difference.

Exactly! What sort of relationship did these people have with their parents if they think that's parent/child? *snort-giggles* So true!
